Fallout: Lonestar isn't just any old Fallout: New Vegas mod. It might just be the most ambitious, coolest-looking Fallout mod currently in development.

The video above is a development diary with the project lead, Christopher Means. He breaks down what makes Fallout: Lonestar so interesting: the game takes place 50 years before New Vegas, and it takes you down to Texas. Fallout in the south sounds interesting to me, especially given that this is a total-conversion mod—there will be a ton of new assets. The game won't just look like Fallout: New Vegas, with stuff rearranged a bit. It helps that the game looks like it'll have neat enemies, locations, a focus on companions and Chris Avellone, one of the designers on Fallout: New Vegas, seems hyped on the project too.

Currently there's no release date on the mod, but there is a lot of pretty concept art to look at. I'll take it!

He is brave to mention funding when its something relating to Bethesda and Zenimax. Best of luck to him and his team though, im interested to see how this progresses.

The great thing about modders is that they are like a colony of ants working for weeks, months and years on each and every aspect of a game. A culmination of effort ongoing long after the developers have moved on.

That said, I would never fund them unless they where strictly regulated. Valve has done good with Black Mesa, allowing the hard work to be rewarded. Bethesda would do well, as well; they utilize the talents of quality mod makers.

I'll give them credit when its released. Fallout 4 might have been released by the time this mod is finished.

Still liked Fallout 3 better

Just a much better overall atmosphere. It felt like a post apocalyptic wasteland. New Vegas was damn good but it never gave me the same sense of exploration or atmosphere. NV's map at it's core was just basically a wide open desert outside of the Vegas strip and a little settlement here and there. And it got repetitive as hell fighting nothing but Radscorpions, Gecko's and Cazador's for the most part. You could say Fallout 3 was a little too heavy on the Ghouls, Super Mutants and Raiders...but they were just way better, more badass enemies IMO. Plus Fallout 3 had the random events like wandering over a hill and seeing a group of Super Mutants in a badass shootout against The Brotherhood of Steel.

I'm not some Fallout veteran (I didn't start the series until FO:3) so I really don't care if New Vegas had more in common with the first two games as far as setting and general storyline.

Reminds me of SureAI's "Nehrim" mod for Oblivion.

I really like the idea of them doing this in Texas. It's a crazy state and this could really have a great flavor for the Fallout universe.

As for the mod in the OP, I'm always skeptical of big total conversions. Hope it doesnt end up being another vaporware project that doesnt complete due to lack of interest, contributors or even support.

Projects around this level of ambition rarely make it to release. They just run out of steam.

If this beats the odds I'll play the crap out it though. Sounds great.

New Vegas is terrific as is, in spite of looking like butt, having a shit combat system, and being typical Obsidian QA mess.

Obsidian actually knows how to make a proper RPG, unlike certain studios who make amusement parks and call them a game: Bethesda.

@Zelda187: the same type thing being done with Shadow of Chernobyl has turned out well. S.T.AL.K.E.R.: Lost Alpha isn't an entirely new game but everything is redesigned and reworked into more of what the early development of the game was promising and it works great. these total rewrites mods are always awesome to have when it's a great game and you've finished once or more but still love the gameplay.

It was mostly just a wide open desert with far less places to explore than Fallout 3. Not to mention that almost 1/3 of the map wasn't even explorable because of those damn mountains.

Where was there life in New Vegas outside of the Vegas Strip and a little settlement here and there?

The only things I liked better about New Vegas were the iron sights on the guns, the DLC/expansions and the fact that your companions couldn't die. Otherwise I thought Fallout 3 was superior in every way.
