Minecraft Sells 20M on PC

As Mojang prepares to release an update bringing the console version of Minecraft more in line with the PC version, the game has reached a new sales milestone on computers: 20 million copies sold.

The game's official website features a counter showing the number of people who have bought the PC/Mac version of the game. That figured topped 20 million earlier today, the same number that the Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions combined to reach last month.

Congrats on that, its an great achievement, even if the game did release 6 years ago, the fact people still play and buy it is simply amazing.

Movie type games get a lot of hate on this board. How is understanding that some like the interactive story telling of such games so difficult?

It's probably the best selling game on any platform it's on. it's also the 3rd best selling game of all time.

I play games like uncharted... but they are what they are.

Minecraft can go from little wooden huts to complex machines, and even mimic real life early computer chip architectures .... im sure there oculd be a muc hebtter engine version... but nobody seems to be doing it right.

Minecraft appeals to all ages and has depth/creativity far beyond what most of us play.

Uncharted is point and click and not even movie quality so in escence all it accels at is graphics... in which case ACTUAL CGI MOVIES DO IT BETTER.

While games like GTA and COD are major sucesses, when you can reach the full extent of casual "non core gamers" (don't mean that in a bad way), like with mobile, you can sell ALOT more.

It's wild to me that Minecraft - a game that benefits mightily from mods, is virtually unlimited on PC, and can be run on a toaster still sells more on consoles, in less time.

It is just, hard for me to enjoy a game unless it have a goal or a story, but that just me.

If you combine sales of 4 consoles, Ipod and Vita, which means PC is a hell of a platform as you need to bring up sales of 6 devices to match it.

@FireEmblem_Man: Nintendo already has a Minecraft game, its called Pikmin. Nintendo asked them to come to their consoles, but they are butthurt. And Microsoft wouldnt allow it on Nintendo either, they fear Nintendo.

Pikmin isn't anything like Minecraft, they aren't even remotely comparable.

But yet they are kinda, theyre both survival games. True you dont build etc, but you do have to get food and survive each night cause scary things come out at night.

Good for Minecraft, not a game that's ever bitten me but it's good to see a small indie game become a massive success. Even if Notch is a hypocrite who slagged off Palmer Lucky for selling out to Facebook and then bent over so quick when a fat cheque was dropped in front of him that it hit him on the back of the head. (Can't say I blame him though ;) )

@FireEmblem_Man: Most Minecraft fans would love Pikmin to death. plus Pikmin has a super high ceiling, Pikmin games can go forever because of the story. I think they would love the ideal and immerse themselves into it quickly. Everytime i play Pikmin i wonder why its not way bigger, but that how life is, sometimes the funnest games have the smallest fan bases.

You don't know that at all, you can't make assumptions and combine your opinion to think every kid will like Pikmin just because you like it, that's a poor business mindset.

True, only thing i fear is it doesnt have a high ceiling, until they can make a part 2 it most likely will just be replaced by another trend. I was addicted to Minecraft, but after 3-4 years of playing it, it gets kinda boring.

you can make your own goal in the game, that's the best part.

MC is just about building shit. I don't care that much for it, but i did play it for a good while a long time ago.

it's also easy to get then, why kids love it. Like i said, it's the new LEGO

If your looking for a more action orientated game.. Terraria.. Which is basically a procedurally generated 2d metrovania with inspiration from Minecraft.

If you "get" the game, it can be quite addictive. I thought it looked stupid until my daughter talked me into playing it. Hundreds of hours, and lots of creations later. Well I'll just say I understand why people become addicted to it.

you know what I like most about Minecraft ?! it's that you can make everything out of nothing , it's really a game for people with creative minds

Not true! Read what was written: The Xbone and 360 versions hit 20 million last month themselves, the 360 version released over a year after PC, and the Bone version naturally years later.
