http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-12218-Video-Game-Examiner~y2010m4d22-Microsoft-40-Million-Xbox-360-units-sold

Microsoft has released their fiscal data for the year and in this report they revealed that the Xbox 360 has sold over 40 million units worldwide since the consoles launch in 2005. In 2005 they sold a reported 5 million units and things have taken-off since then. With each seeing an increase over the last, Microsoft has managed to move a lot of units and looks to keeps things moving. The next milestone for the system will be 50 million and it looks like it'll reach that without much concern. Below, you'll find a year by year breakdown of the system sales.sold numbers, should interesting holiday season for the 360.

Cool, that means I get more money...wait a minute.

Once they passed 20 million, I was pretty secure with my 360's lifespan. It's nice they are at 40 Million now.

40.2 million and they haven't even resorted to releasing a Slim console yet. Well done. However, they'll receive a massive bump in sales when Project Natal and the Xbox 360 Slim are released.

Would you honestly buy a "slim" X360 after the whole RROD fiasco? If they released one tomorrow, I would wait atleast 8 months to hear if people are complaining of RROD or other such breakdowns before buying it. If after that time, it's reliable, then I would definitely through some dough on that.

RROD has pretty much been eliminated in existing Xbox 360's. But try to stop for a moment and use your head for thinking; would Microsoft really want another repeat of the RROD? Or would they take their time developing a stable, worry-free hardware revision that doesn't require Billion dollar warranty bail-outs? ...

As of Q3 (fiscal year) 2009 Sony has sold 33.5 million PS3 units. Not bad considering it's a year behind.

Looks like there's good competition between the two.

Care to elaborate? If you wanna compare on even ground 360 sold 39 million units total as of Q3 2009. That's 6.5 million units ahead of PS3 with a whole year's gap between the two's release dates.

Imagine X360 Slim coupled with Halo Reach, the sales would get a solid boost I'd imagine. Heck, I might even think about getting one myself so I can play all those Halo games I missed.

Just curious, what does the RROD rate and the amount of consoles banned from XBL have to do with units sold?

Most all RRODs get sent back to Microsoft for a replacement. As for being banned, I can only imagine a very small percentage of persons banned from XBL buying another 360.

Bad press = less consoles sold. If it didn't have RROD it would have had higher sales numbers and maybe not have completely soured its reputation in Japan. That is just an estimate though.

You honestly think that people would immediately go out & buy another 360 system, knowing that they have a free 3-year warranty on RROD? I know I wouldn't.

It'll be interesting to see how much the 360 sells compared to PS3 this holiday. PS3 + Move + GT5 (hopefully) vs. 360 Slim (pricedrop?) + Natal + Reach.

a xbox 360 slim (with a pricedrop) would sell good, and if natal is a succes that will also sell systems, but halo reach wont sell a single system, GT5 will do very well for ps3, i think move will flop tho.
