Is Gamespot a good site for reviews?

I think they're good for reviews but some of their reviews aren't their greatest

Yeah, as long as you use other sources.

Don't forget, reviews are nothing but opinions.  You can usually tell a bad game if everyone reviews it badly, though for niche games, someone may give it a good store.

Even with reviews, it's still good to research the games.

Yeah, it's best to compare the score with other sites, because you are only getting one persons opinion if you stick to one site's scores.

This is clearly a ploy to keep having people come to thier sites. Think about this? Why would they make a article about PS3 is not worth it right now? Gamespot your job is to review games, not tell me what's best to buy.shungokustasu

I admire their spirit and enthusiasm on On the Spot, and the team seem like a colorful bunch. But it is a shame that I have to say I don't like their reviews at all. There have just been too many occasions in the past where they have gotten it completely wrong.

Example are:

• Shenmue
• Twilight Princess
• Metal Gear Solid
• Metal Gear Solid 3
• Gran Turismo
• Motor Storm
• WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Brutally honest on game reviews which is for the best, but sometimes their scores are pretty weird.

IMHO I used to think they had the best reviews, but I think since late last year their reviews just went to crap. I really just look at Gamespot as having good forums now, not so much for having good reviews.DA_B0MB

For me, NO. For other people, YES. There are just so many reviews and scores that I don't understand and don't agree with.

Metal Gear Solid- They gave it an 8.5. AN 8.5!!! Come on now. That was definitely an AAA game.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater- They gave it an 8.7. Probably one of the saddest ending in a video game.

Mario Kart 64 and DD- 6.4 and 7.9 In Mario 64, they gave value a 5 and tilt a 6. Something is messed up there.

Zelda: Majora's Mask- 8.3 This is the one review that really boggles my mind. What did it do so wrong that it warrants an 8.3. Nintendo tried to give us something diff than OOT with MM. Even though the gameplay stayed the same, the game had you exploring a different world, Termina, instead of Hyrule, it had a diff main villian, and the story didn't even revolve around Zelda. And yet it got docked points for being to much like OOT. Then TP comes a knockin at the door, but gets docked pts for being too much like OOT. So yes, I don't agree with TP's score either.

I agree with GTA III's 9.6, but I don't get why San Andreas and Vice City got a 9.6 They were basically the same except for the different settings and a few added features. Gamespot knocks TP for being to much like OOT, but somehow all 3 GTAs score 9.6

Shenmue 7.8 Plain and simple. They just got that one wrong. Thall all I have to say.

Shadow of the Colossus- 8.7 That game was a masterpiece and was robbed of AAA.

Devil May Cry 3- 8.6 Saying how the game is "rediculously, unreasonably difficult, and then when they review the Special Addition and give it an 8.2 saying the "combat isn't as gruelingly difficult". Well what do you want.

Perfect Dark Zero- I really shouldn't even have to talk about this game. This was the most overrated piece of garbage that Rare has made. Yet, Gamespot was blinded by the hype and gave the game AAA.

Baten Kaitos Origins- 7.5 Except for the music, this game was superior to its predecessor in every way. It had a better story, characters, voice overs (thank god), and gameplay than Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings (8.5), but for some reason it scores a whole pt lower. The reviewer said in the bad comments "brutal boss fights with lots of level grinding required". Don't you level grind in most all RPGs? So I don't know why you would dock pts on this game for it, but not others.

I think your better off playing the demos yourself and seeing if it appeals to your taste of games then going by ratings. I seen some of the gamesites playing games and would complain how hard the game was, Ninja Gaiden anyone? I loved ninja gaiden but in my mind, the game being so hard was the awsome thing about the game, and to be honest once I mastered all the moves, and studied each enemies moves on how they like to attack, the game was alot more fun then it was hard. I am telling u, u are better off trying these games out then taking reviews because alot of these game sites are only judging a game from what they think and thats just one persons opinion. :)

As a gamer, my opinion on a game overrides the opinion of any game rating system.

However, my opinion does not override the opinions of other gamers and other gamers' opinions do not override mine.  

I only go by a game rating system if I need help choosing which game to buy if deciding which game to buy becomes too difficult.

Gamespot does a fairly good job at reviewing games though.
