I'm betting strong that Valve will announce the next Half Life game later this month.

https://www.roadtovr.com/valve-to-launch-a-flagship-vr-game-later-this-year-on-index-and-other-steamvr-headsets/

https://github.com/DankParrot/Source2Wiki/wiki/Half-Life-VR

What happens when you combine a AAA game from Valve made for a new platform as it's flagship title when there are endless leaks of HLVR in a series of games that has always pushed boundaries and the flagship game in question is a 2019 release likely to be revealed at the one and only big Valve event each year: The International in August.

Well, you get a monument in gaming history as Half Life makes it's return. Feel free to bump this thread one month from now to ridicule me, but I think I'll likely be bumping it this month when the reveal happens.

Yeah, it's on the way for sure. And it's going to make VR explode.

I just hope they're going the Boneworks route. Full locomotion, entirely physics based. Valve has internal meetings with StressLevelZero and saw the game at least 18 months ago, before the 'Best VR Guns' video was released, so one would hope that if Valve hadn't thought of some of those ideas, that they've worked them into HLVR at this point.

@darthbuzzard: Half Life VR, i'm sure most HL fans want a HL title that has the number 3 in it.

@darthbuzzard: Yeah, everything has to be top notch from physics to graphics to proper motion that feels truly intuitive etc. A new Half Life in VR needs to be revolutionary in and of itself considering the history of the series, and because VR is revolutionary, and demands the very best effort by devs.

And I was thinking Valve would want to sell loads of a new HL game, rather than stick a new one on a niche peripheral.

It's still the Half Life IP. And unlike Portal Bridge Constructor, this will be a full AAA in-house game that should (hopefully) live up to previous entries.

@subspecies: Its always going to be niche.

Not to mention that HL has been away for so long with expectations growing bigger each year no way will this turn out well.

Unless it has a 3 next to it & not VR people will just see it for what it is, a cash crab gimmicky game.

I want Half Life 3. If it's VR only, I will be pissed. If it's a full fledged game that has a separate VR campaign, then that's fine. But Goddamnit, I want Eli Vance alive. I want to be able to go back in time and save Eli, somehow. If Valve makes me buy VR just to save Eli Vance, well then I'll buy VR.

*I just recently played through Episode 1 and 2 for the first time and I love the story.. Except for the whole Eli Vance dying thing.

Uhh.... Half Life 3 as a standard PC game is a bigger cash grab. You realize that a VR game will sell less and is more risky, therefore it's the opposite of a cash grab?

Half life 3 will never happened because valve are no longer game developers. it would only happened if valve decide to publish/fund it and some other developer make it.

and i think crowbar collective the one behind black mesa should do HL3.

I hope it's true. And yes, Eli Vance/Alyx's story thread needs to continue.

But I would completely understand it if Valve chose to make a continuation of Half Life 2's story as a traditional 2D game, and then make a separate Half-Life related VR game (like a side story or prequel). I'm not expecting long campaigns right now, but even a solid 5-7 hour AAA VR experience directly from Valve themselves would be incredible.

No if HL 3 would release it would be a full game, whereas if HL is on VR it will be another 5hr game trying to cash in on the HL name, and therefore a cash crab.

Oh isn't this exciting! Can't wait for you to be wrong. Gabe has said that the VR games they are making are full length AAA, and the Valve team doesn't even want to make demos anymore; they are literally itching (and have been for years now) to make AAA VR games.

If Valve are no longer game developers, explain the 3 AAA VR games being made as well as the other two games they've recently released.

I would expect L4D before HL3. Not because I want it that way, but because that's how this world works.

I stop caring for Half-Life series right after Episode 2 and from that point on, I don't give a damn about HL3 & Valve all together. And besides, we haven't even gotten Half-Life 2 Episode 3 yet. Valve is just sick of Half-Life period! If you don't have passion for a project, why bother?

Valve is like an easily distracted dog that just wanders off and does what it wants. Someone needs to put an e-collar on and set that sucker to max shock.

VR naysayers will ultimately fall into two camps. One will simply stop saying that VR is niche when VR eventually, inevitably stops being niche. The other will see VR suddenly cease to be niche, and will then redefine the word "niche" and goalpost shift.

Meh. I had fun with the previous Half-Life games but I’m not a huge fan of them so whether or not they ever get around to making another one isn’t really something that I care about one way or the other. Probably the only way that I’d ever play it though is if they made a traditional Half-Life game with a console version of it. I’m not interested in gaming on the PC nor am I interested in VR.

If they decided to release Half Life 3 exclusive for VR, that will royally piss off the generations of Half Life fans that have been begging for a sequel for the past 10+ years, and if it ended up just being a spin-off game rather than a full-fledged sequel - that wouldn't be much better either.

It will most likely by a VR Half life or HL 2 remake which is cool there's no way they will make HL3 for VR this is coming from someone that is a VR enthusiast.

Honestly that would be fine by me. HL is perfect for VR, and a remake of the originals would be instantly classic.

I think they just add VR to HL. A port of the 20 year old game.

They won’t make HL3.

Epic Store is why Half Life 3 is coming.

Valve was silly not to develop Half Life 3 to coincide with their Steam Machines. An exclusive like that could have possibly got those things off the ground.

So, is nobody even considering the possibility of HL3 being a VR game, but not exclusively? Like, it wouldn't have to be "only VR", and it also wouldn't have to be a separate VR campaign or add-on to an otherwise non-VR game. It could very well be a full game, with normal FPS controls on regular screens, that is also fully playable in VR. That way, it would be both the Half Life 3 that everybody wants, AND the flagship title that defines AAA VR gaming.

Frankly, if HL3 is really happening, I don't see them doing it any other way.

A vr version of existing half-life games wouldn't excite me much.

But hl3 would be interesting though.

Uhh.... Half Life 3 as a standard PC game is a bigger cash grab. You realize that a VR game will sell less and is more risky, therefore it's the opposite of a cash grab?

No if HL 3 would release it would be a full game, whereas if HL is on VR it will be another 5hr game trying to cash in on the HL name, and therefore a cash crab.

Oh isn't this exciting! Can't wait for you to be wrong. Gabe has said that the VR games they are making are full length AAA, and the Valve team doesn't even want to make demos anymore; they are literally itching (and have been for years now) to make AAA VR games.

Oh really can I read the link where the fatman says all of this that you claim, don't get me wrong i'm not saying you're lying I just want a good read to laugh at.

Loading Video...

Well he says it on video but I didn't hear him say HL (I didn't watch it for long) so lets see what these 3 games are.

I see it like this, and that's if these VR games are shit (like them all) people will just say well they are VR games and let the fat man be, but if he were to announce HL3 and it sucked he would never live it down.

Valve quit making good games years ago,

Dont get your hopes

Valve was killed off for steam to be the main focus, thats where all the money is for gabens hoho factory and that man can eat alot of hohos.

Seriously tho if Half Life 3 is VR only I will lmao.

Guarenteed garbage that will tarnish the series.

Valve is like an easily distracted dog that just wanders off and does what it wants. Someone needs to put an e-collar on and set that sucker to max shock.

Why? Current PC gaming is largely thanks to Valve being Valve.

Lol if valve didn't exist PC gaming would be perfectly fine.

Also valve VR = a filler game no matter how big they make it.

People want half life 3 full blown PC version that pushes stuff forwards.

You know in Rocky III how it opens with Eye Of The Tiger? Having defeated Apollo, Rocky becomes top dog complacent and commercialized, fighting soft-balls? While in the background Clubber Lang sits quietly training hard in preparation to rip his head off?

That's Valve and Epic.
