I'm afraid the PS3 is in trouble. While I can appreciate a format allowing for more space, thus longer games, perhaps it could have waited until the production was cheaper. I worry for the PS3's future.

PS3's blu-ray drive is better than even some high-end HD-DVD and Blu-Ray stand alone players.

Every commercial I see says.. "buy it on dvd and blu ray" I never hear anything about buy it on HD-DVD. I work at Target in the electronics department, and I can honestly say I have sold maybe 3 HD-DVDs (no hd-dvd add ons for the 360) and lots of Blu Ray movies. Blu Ray has more movies coming out in the next month than HD-DVD announced for the entire year.

I think "The Departed" is the only HD-DVD commercial I've seen. Well, I'm pretty sure it said that.

When people say that Blu-Ray is selling three times as many HD-DVDs I haven't really seen people actually run off the numbers.  Is Blu-Ray outselling HD-DVDs by thousands? tens of thousands? more?

I've seen that website before, but I couldn't remember the URL. It's strange that the best selling BD movie and PS3 game are preorders. Does that website only account for Amazon sales on those two things?

That site proved rather useless in answering my question.

So in the # of top 10,000 catagory, the gap that seperates the two formats is... 20-25?

There hasn't been an official released number... just a chart that says almost 3:1 sold. http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/01/18/where-are-the-official-hd-dvd-vs-blu-ray-sales-numbers/ (Posted Jan. 18 ) EDIT: Here's a more recent site that says Blu-Ray has sold over 2:1. http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/456 (Posted Feb. 1)

Which unfortunatly just gets me back to square one.  It does make a huge difference if one format is selling over the other by thousands, or hundreds of thousands.

I don't think we can really take stock in the BR>HDDVD right now, becuse the market is not that big. 1.5m (possible) BR players, and 200K HDDVD players is not a market. I will tell you which one will win that war. The first player that is less than $200.00 will take the cake, untill then people are just choking on the price of the HDTV that is required to enjoy what either product offers.

i think it suprised alot of ppl. hd dvd had a 6mnth head start over BR. Now Br is either close to hd dvd on sold, or suprass it. either way i must say br did well even if it started off late.

PS3 is carrying Blu-Ray through because people aren't rushing out to buy next-gen DVD players, but they ARE rushing out to get PS3s, so the only format that even really has a significant market share is PS3 because nobody really buys stand alone players.  Or the 360 add-on.  Come on guys, who are we kidding, it's not flopping but it's not a success.

I still sort of think that HDDVD can win because Sony will make a dumb move with Blu-Ray.  Just because it's selling now doesn't mean it's going to win.  I feel like the next-gen format war hasn't even really started yet, and I almost think it never will, and that DVD will remain the format of choice for years to come.
