Poll If Death Stranding flops, will it be the end of Kojima's career? (74 votes)

Yes, the guy is done. 14%
Nah, he can do something else. 86%

Death Stranding may be the the first Kojima console game I don't buy at launch. There is still a chance I may do it.. we'll see how those reviews are on Friday. But if the game becomes a flop, will this be the end of Kojima's career, SW? He's already nearing the end of it so I don't know what else he would do except maybe some weird indie game. Let me know your thoughts!

Won't flop.

Be good, which in critic language is "the most thing ever, good gollys".

Or shit, which in critic language will be "This is a great game but it might be too different for common pond scum gamer, le art ohheohe sacre bleu"

It would be praised by critics with the disclaimer that its concepts are a little beyond the reach of the average 100 billion brain celled organisms.

You've got to be kidding. Not even close. Kojima loves--really, really loves what he does. He has stated numerous times he plans on making video games until he dies. And he has a solid fanbase that will buy his games until he dies.

That is like asking if the next Legend of Zelda/Super Mario game flops, will it be the end of Shigeru Miyamoto career.

I'm sure Kojima would be flattered to be considered in the same group as Miyamoto, but he's not even close. His biggest success was with Metal Gear Solid. If Death Stranding flops, who will publish his next game?

Its simple, if the games a success Kojima will claim most of the credit, if it flops its his team that will get most of the flack from fans, shit his followers will even blame Konami for it, anyone but Kojima.

Either way it will be entertaining, as for him being done, nah Sony will prop him up for years to come, then they will realise why Konami gave him the arse lol.

Anyway, after just literally watching a 7 min launch trailer, I still don't know what this game is about from gameplay a standpoint.

Kojima has a cult behind him analogous to Trump. He could **** up every game from now until the end of time, and he’d still be worshipped. His games (everything since MGS 3) have been utter shit aside their technical and gameplay competence and he’s doing fine. The guy’s in the unique and enviable position of being able to create whatever he desires, no matter how awful, and be rewarded for it.

I doubt it will flop, and even if it does, it won't stop him from making games. Plenty of flops have come out and the devs of said flops are still making games.

No, I seriously doubt that. He’s a great game creator and I’m sure any company would be happy to have him onboard making something for them. I really doubt that this game will flop though as he has a solid pedigree of games in his portfolio.

His games are by-and-large solid, if not a bit bloated. He has a lot of talent, but this game is just a big question mark for me. As it is, I think it will do quite well in sales... He's been dangling that carrot pretty heavily.

Say the game were to fail horrendously, it would depend on if a publisher would be willing to back him, or if he were willing to scale back to more indie-like status.

He's running his own studio now, depending on how he negotiated royalties on its sales may have more to say about the viability of his studio and independence going forward than the success of his game. Even a lot of independent studios who make great games don't seem to have much freedom to take time to breathe and work on projects of their choosing, Platinum Games is a good example, they just chase project after project just to keep the lights on. At very least, if Sony is willing to foot the bill for his games then he should be okay regardless.

Also, they guy made MGS4, like worst game I ever played, and that game was celebrated to no end. There's an emperor's invisible clothes quality to his games and him that honestly I don't think he could make a game people would regard as bad even if it was. And if he makes games exclusively for Sony and has their cult of support then I don't think there's anything he really has to worry about.

Sony will boy whatever he does, and imagine even if they get sick of him like Konami did, that Kojima's ego will keep him making games with own money, and likely burn out like Cliffy B, where he'll run out of actual good ideas, make some tripe and quit the business. I can see how some people think Death Stranding is the game his Lawbreakers, but I see another few games in him. People will pay just for his name to be associated with their game.

Too big to fail.

The Dorito Pope will personally suck off every game journo in observable galaxy to ensure this game's good scores.

It could end up a Turd Roasting Simulator 2019 and still get it's 9/10's.

Seems like it's getting praise everywhere, I can wait though, too many games I have to play now.

Edit: Scratch that, seem like the reviews are a mixed bag. See how interested I'm in the game, can't even be bothered to do my research... :P :P :P

Maybe you should look harder as it has like 11 mixed reviews and 1 bad, not exactly being praised everywhere unless that everywhere is a PlayStation site lol.

Impossible to destroy his god status. Fanboys will eat anything he makes. DS will sell millions, but i dont think it will sell as good as other PS exclusives, God of War, Horizon..

Wonder if his friend dorito Jeoff will nominate DS for GOTY with 84 meta and probably lower user reviews lol

This is a game without the A Hideo Kojima Game...

Actually looks more fun tbh that is some unbalanced ratings. Now if Kojima made this....

No. Death Stranding is essentially an experimental indie art project with a big budget. Experiments are always risky endeavours. If it fails, then he can just go back to making stealth games, or finally make that Silent Hills game (under a new IP) many have been looking forward to. If DS succeeds, then he can continue making whatever bonkers art projects he pleases.

1. It's not indie.

2. It's not experimental.

3. It's definitely not an art either like all of his games.

That is certainly an eloquent description for a "fetch-quest" genre. Kojima has switched up the game, and made it all about that shit.

You could also just call it a "parcel delivery simulator"... which, for a while now, is what people were calling it for a joke, and that's more-or-less what the game turned out to be.

It's not a new genre though. Turns out Death Stranding is a throwback to the first ever computer game that Kojima created, an obscure 8-bit MSX delivery simulator:

Penguin Adventure (1986)

Before Death Stranding, Kojima made an obscure delivery game for a Microsoft computer

3. Art is subjective. One could even argue that all video games are art.

1. Don't at all see how, not even metaphorically. Sounds like DC for Kojima and downright insulting to indie devs/games by somehow equating them to low quality.

2. It's not. Experimental means something that hasn't been done before. Plenty of games had fetch quests and almost nothing but them.

3. If you adhere to a lose term then yes, every thing that involved creativity is art but that's DC for Kojima. No art degrades the medium it's utilizing, if it does, that's extremely bad. Nonsense could not be considered as art which is ironically all Kojima has to show for him self.
