How is it a scam?  They're not forcing you to participate.  If anyting, it is the complete opposite of a scam, considering they are giving you the opportunity to make free money if you dont care for the cards and just choose to sell them.  Alot of people on my friends lists are selling the cards and have bought a free game or 2 from it already.  I'm sorry, but sounds like you just have no clue about what you're talking about.

If you dont care for the system, you dont pay anyting, in fact you can still get free cards just by playing the games that are part of the program, then you can sell them for free money.  I'm sorry, but clearly you are very much misinformed about steam trading cards.  Go research it first, then come back here and speak about it instead of sounding clueless.

Thats not true, the ones buying for badges sometimes get rare/uncommon emoticons, backgorunds, foil cards, which they can in turn actually sell for profit.  Not to mention, once your steam level is very high, your rare items and booser pack drop percentage increases, meaning easier access to make more money for the long haul.  Again, please research it thoroughly before speaking as if you know the system.

Valve is actually giving you the tools to "MAKE MONEY" if you play the system right.  You're just short sighted to see it.

What Valve is doing with trading cards doesnt fit the description of a scam.  With a scam, you are usually duped by another party in that they dont hold true to their end of the bargain.  In this case, Valve is telling us exactly what we get out of buying cards and crafting badges.  Not to mention, you can make money out of this.  You especially make money if you don't plan to buy anything and just get the free card drops.  I'm wondering if you even have Steam, otherwise you would know that you can make free money today if you have any of the games that are part of the program.  I'm sorry, but you really need to learn the definition of a scam.

I'm sure this will turn out to be a goldmine for Valve (and for me). People are willing to spend money on everything, no matter how useless it is.

But when the inital strike cools down I expect to see cards going for ~3$ and if I have 20 cards (and much much more) I can make 10$ per game I own.
