I noticed something when watching a bunch of trailers for all the new games coming out on Xbox and Sony, all their big games are about the same shat. Killing stuff with guns. Its like these studios have no fresh ideals about games, theyre just like, what do dudebros like? O, they like guns, lots of guns. Lets add guns. Can we not get any fresher ideals from these big money studios? Why do we always have to rely on Nintendo and Indie games for diversity in gaming? My Twitter friend said it best,

AAA gaming can do much better. What do you think SW? Tired of all these same games featuring guns from these biig money companies trying to play it safe? Or are you excited for these dudbro games who just love guns and shooting shat?

Can’t say that it really bothers me at all. I’m really looking forward to playing a lot of these big AAA games that are coming out. Don’t really care if the big studios play it safe or not, they’re making stuff that I very much enjoy.

I think the AAA scene lack some serious creativity. Got no problems with guns though, shooting shit is fun.

What a bizarre thread talking about guns in games. Honestly I really don't care nor think about it. Not every games are going to use guns such as Forspoken is a good example. That game focus on casting spell attacks and no guns are in it. Hell I don't view Bow/Arrow as a gun, so not every game uses gun but only Bow/Arrow.

Either way, I really don't care if every developers put guns in their games. I work what's given to me. (To the player)

Because combat is a really powerful gameplay motivator/type and shooting is a lot easier for most people than figuring out the precise timings and mechanics in unarmed combat. Shooters are easier to sell to people who just aren't that good at games. The familiar setting is another selling factor. Most shooters aren't in far off futures or fantasies, but closer to the present real world.

Dude, every game might not use guns, but most of them use some sort of projectile. Do you deny the arrow in botw, or the sling shot in oot? Even diddy Kong uses his peanut shooter. Mario kart shoot shell rockets. I don't even need to mention advance wars do I? Nintendo seems to be more adult than you think...hmm?

Non shooter AAA games are rare. I hear even Belden rings have guns. The only major AAA game we got without any guns is animal crossing.

What do you mean all AAA games are about guns? You’re the biggest sheep there is and you know Xenoblade, Pokemon, and BOTW 2 are all coming out within the next year. And then what about GoWR, FFXVI, Forspoken, Hogwarts Legacy, or Gotham Knights?

Silly thread.

Edit: I’ll own up to you excluding Nintendo. That’s my bad. Though I listed off plenty of others. Still silly.

A contributing factor to what I said is first person view. A lot of the shooters have that in common, because it's cheaper than designing full character animations, hit detection and camera mechanics. First person is of course better for shooting than it is for melee fighting and platforming. Not to say there aren't a lot of third person shooters. But most coming out are still in first person.

Guns are fun in gaming but the AAA market does need more variety I miss the days of SSX and Burnout.

@mesome713: think about this all the time... Its very patronizing to assume I want to play "tag" in every video game I play. It's like woven into the culture that we must be holding something violent to use against anything you can dream up for rewards.

Really though, gaming is so diversified at this point you can find something for anyone. Go play the goose game, right?

They are games. It's like I always tell my kids; if you can't differentiate between reality and fantasy that's an individual problem, not an industrial problem.

There are plenty of games with guns and plenty without. If they hurt your feelings or you don't want your kids playing them... well then don't play them. Pretty simple.

Does it matter if it's a game where someone with a gun kills other people with guns or someone with a sword the size of a schoolbus killing off the native wildlife for XP?

Projectiles work well with video games. It's reaction based. Aim and targeting. Some of the earliest games were based on this concept, space invader, galaga. It just works well. Even if you don't use guns look at games that have reaction times and precision in it. It's almost all of them. Shooting something works great for this type of game. So even if it's not a projectile or gun, it's a sword, it's a barrel, it's a punch, it's a shell. Kirby shoots shit out of his mouth. It's all the same

Not that I have a problem with shooters or guns in games, but I would agree that AAA developers/publishers need to change things up and maybe branch out a bit.

There seems to be absolutely no risk-taking element to AAA games these days, or any desire to try new things.

I'm generally not too nostalgic as I think things are generally better (thanks to independent games, of course), but major studios and publishers seemed more adventurous in the late 90's and early 00's.

AAA games are getting more and more expensive to make. Thus investors are not so willing to take big risks.

That is why.

Back in the 80's, 90's and 00's games had far smaller teams and less costly to make.

This is the dev team size for every mario game up to and including 3D World.

3D World was great. I would argue the weakest one was Super Mario Land 1. With NSMB2 being the second weakest.

SMO had over 300 people working on it, unless there were any duplicates from this link I missed,

https://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_Super_Mario_Odyssey_staff

Needless to say, the mario games iwth the most personality, also were the ones that were made before the dev teams got really big. Super Mario Odyssey was mechanically top notch. But it didnt have the personality of 64.

Disagree with 3D World being great. I mean, it's not a terrible game. But I didn't like the movement, level design or powerups, which is pretty bad things to not like for Mario games. My personal least favorite Mario game, and I really hope they don't go that route again.

Highly agree with bold. AAA developers really should scale down.

I can kind of see where TC is coming from... Western AAA shooters don't appeal to me either. But there's clearly an audience for that kind of game, so that's why Western AAA studios keep pumping them out. Whatever sells is what keeps getting made. That's how the video game industry has always operated.

Not every AAA game has guns, but I take the point. That is why Indie games are so important, and I support them when I can. That's were most of the innovation and new ideas come from.

I guess, but I never have a hard time finding a wide variety of games to play spanning many different genres. I feel as though if you go looking for patterns you'll find them just about anywhere you look in life.

There are only a finite number of things that devs can do (that will sell) and unfortunately everything is about money these days so more often than not they will chase trends in hope of keeping their doors open. There is a reason why all these publishers and large AAA studios are looking to sell.

There are sports, racing, shooters, beat em ups including things like musou, fighting games, RPG's, RTS, MOBA, strategy, open world, horror, music based, survival (well.. a few to come soon, not sure the other big ones are actually AAA just yet) etc. all in the AAA realm. The thing is you usually only hear about the same few games over and over.

I could suggest a lot of AAA games (and even more outside of that) that are overlooked if anyone needs a hand finding something they might enjoy. If you only want to play brand new games then it feels as though the drought exists within the realm of shooters as well. I mean we have MW2 to look forward to (maybe) but everything else either seems as though it's on a back burner or seemingly vanished for the time being.

However, it does seem a lot of the AAA studios are just kicking out cookie cutter knockoffs these days...

I'm seeing plenty of variety these days. The market is oversaturated with shooters but there are plenty of other quirky games to play like Stray or Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Sometimes you just have to step outside of your comfort zone.

Heh, reminds me the nebelwerfer from Company of heroes.

But you have to reach Age IV to get to any gunpowder based weapons, not a lot of games go that far :)
