how the hell does it cost almost 140 million $ for a bunch of people in front of a pc for a few years?

osirisx3
How the hell can you be posting on a gaming website for this long and not understand the basics of a game's design and budget?

By the way, it will be 5.5 years of development when it launches.  Not 3 or 4.

SaltyMeatballs

Did they start working on it after straight GTA IV launched? I am not sure which is why I guessed 4 years.

Most devs start development of a game, before the current one they're working even ships. Though most of that is conceptual stuff.

[QUOTE="k2theswiss"][QUOTE="SaltyMeatballs"] Hundreds of people getting top dollar (this is Rockstar, this is GTA, you get good money).

Let's generalise a bit and say $50k a year, 4 years of GTA V development, that is $200k for that one person over the development of the game, let's say 400 employees, that is $80 million right there.

I'm just guessing though, I don't know the pay or number of employees, though I'm sure many make more than $50k a year.

SaltyMeatballs

yup. now i would say number of people would be more 150- TOPS 200 pay would range 50k for lower jobs to 100k. so ya would balance out

Hewll no! Over 300 people worked on COD rehash BLOPS 2, GTA should have the same or more.

Edit: actually, maybe not, those are 2 year development cycles so they need more in shorter time frame.

;)

137 million for the game, 100 million for advertising, 15% fee for Sony/Microsoft/Valve, % for the retail stores selling physical copies, 2-3 dollars per disc/case.

At say $200 mil (dev + marketing + misc) they will need to sell over 3.3 million copies @ $60 to break even.

I think they can do it, hell I think they can sell over 5 mil with mostly pre-orders and day 1, then another 5 mil over the next years.

You talk like a lot games do this. This an execption and an installment that is released every 5-6 years with huge sales.

StrongBlackVine
Just like the cost of education, development costs for traditional gaming vehicles (like big PC or console titles) will grow in big ways. Epic even acknowledged that the iOS title, Infinity Blade, was a more efficient use of time and money than Gears of War. That is a peek into a more realistic future for games.

GTAIV supposedly pushed 22 million copies, as of Sept. 2011.

It's over 25M now, as of Nov 2012 according to GI. The game has insane legs if it's able to sell 3 million 4 years after release.

I don't think it will even sell 10 million. GTA 4 was a huge letdown for everybody and no body seems to care about the series anymore.

And I don't doubt they'll make it all back in a couple hours. $140 million in gross revenue could be made through the sales of 2,333,333.333... copies of the game. Even if they sell "only 10 million copies" that will be half a BILLION in gross revenue.

Meh. GTA died on the PSX with London for me. dobzilian
GTA 1 and 2 sucked if you remember correctly, GTA III started the AAA scores and with every GTA releasing after it never dropped below 9, GTA 1 and 2 just couldn't compete with other games because there were BETTER games than it. GTA 1 received 78.50% from GameRankings GTA 2 received 71.50% GTA 3 95.27% GTA VC 94.43% And so on and on.

Yup. The first trailer of GTA V totally doesn't have 30 million views on youtube.....

And if people can buy the same COD game every year and get disappointed each time, then I'm sure one letdown won't stop them from buying a new GTA five years later. (Though I think GTA 4 was excellent)
