With all the hate on how graphics do not matter but only gameplay you are wrong. The better the graphics (realistic or artistic), the more immersed you feel in the game combined with the great gameplay. They go hand in hand. The term NEXT-GEN mostly refers to next-generation graphics, physics, technical stuff....

If graphics don't matter than does that mean you wouldn't care to play MGS4, Gears, Uncharted, Halo, Half-Life, Crysis, etc with pong-like graphics???

Graphics matter for reviewers...just look at Uncharted 2. If that game looked average or mediocre, it would get a 6.

When people say graphics don't matter it's because people like you say "omg gfx king eberyting else pwn3d!!11!"

Yeah graphics matter to a certain extent, but GAMEplay should matter most.

as long as the gameplay is there it doesnt matter. crysis on low is the same game as crysis maxed its just as fun. difference is maxed is just that much better.

doesnt mean low is bad.

so no graphics dont matter.

BUT

they usually go hand in hand.

the top games pretty much all had/have the top graphics for their time.

I thought everyone already knew you need both graphics and gamplay to illustrate the atmosphere when necassary. (I.E. Dead Space).

The graphics are what sucks a person in, resulting in them buying the game. You can't tell a game has great gameplay from a video or a screenshot.

Agreed. Do we really need a "We need to appreciate graphics more!" thread? I mean, we get graphic comparison and those kind of threads every 15 minutes.

Graphics are important, but NOT as much as gameplay. Seriously, everyone is judging Modern Warfare Wii will be a bad game because of graphics, but gameplay hasn't even been proven yet.

I did. It has a trashy pos multiplayer. Besides, I played the first one and hated it. The second is an exact clone so I will hate it too. Not going to even rent it this time.

This 100%, however all of those are still important and if one of them fails (other than "playing with friends" because single player games do exist) the game will not reach god tier.

Deus Ex had poor graphics when it was released and that's one of the most immersive games out there. Many even say it's the best game ever made.

Usually it's the soundtrack that immerses me into a game.

I've never been one to say that 'graphics' don't matter, but I am one that believes that jaw-dropping visuals aren't entirely needed to create an amazing gameplay experience. I'm not saying that I don't like it when a game looks great, but a game's true worth lies in how it manages to incorporate ALL of its elements, not just a few. Even within the topic of 'graphics' itself, I find it a little more complex. For instance, I can deal with a game's visuals if it's a bit technologically behind, but has the artistic value to more than make up for it. However, if a game is broken in other areas, I couldn't care less how it looked. I would just look at screenshots and videos of it and save myself both the money and the horror of having to play it. To that extent, graphics, visuals, horsepower, or any of similar term has no profound impact on what I play and enjoy.

I agree with the topic's point; graphics indeed matter. However, if that was the ONLY thing a game was judged on, I would never go back and play the classic games of yesteryear, as they would be deemed irrelevant by most of today's standards. I'm all for a game looking good, but I like it more when it PLAYS good. :P

Heck no. That game is so horrible you can play that game in VR and still not get immersed. The AI is too stupid to be realistic, and the gameplay is just bleh. If a lone US operative somehow got into top secret bases in North Korea, don't you think a huge manhunt would ensue? Well, apparently the developers didn't, because the AI just ambles along despite the fact that they saw you like three seconds ago. One of the games that I have been most immersed in is Fallout. 1, not 3. Half-Life 1 and 2 also immerses me pretty well. Almost all of those games have been trumped graphic-wise.

yes but the game itself doesnt change.

the game may be 'better; but its not 'worse' on low.

if you take away a games graphics and it becomes worse or unplayable then it was never a good game to begin with.

Noone is saying graphics doesnt matter. what most people mean is that it does not matter the most. The core gameplay of the game is what matter most. Graphics is a bonus, extra enjoyment for the game.

How many crappy SciFi channel shows have much better graphics than Family Guy or The Simpsons, but aren't worth their weight in poo?

I can tell you as a matter of fact that Chrono Cross is still a superior game and more fun to play than current day JRPGs. Despite their superior graphics.

Graphics don't matter. Only artwork. Gameplay is king.

They do matter but gameplay does too. If U2 didn't have fun gameplay, I wouldn't be buying it and if Brawl's graphics were like Melee's, I'd rather play Melee.

They go hand in hand, both are important.

If graphics mattered then everyone would game on the PC, and have the latest graphics cards.:)

If graphics matters, then why use a console? The PS3 uses a modified nVidia 7800 GTX (which is 5 years old), and nVidia has made since then the 8, 9, 100, 200-Series GPUs, and is now working on the 300-Series.

The original Xbox used a modified GeForce 4-Series GPU, and the 360 uses the ATI Xenos (precursor to the R600 Series).

Here is an example: I bought "Devil May Cry 4" for the PC. On the back of the box was printed "Optimized for both 64-bit and Direct-X 10". I have played games under XP with DX 9.0c (7800 GTX card) and DX 10.0 (9-Series nVidia), and there is a noticeable difference in graphics quality.:)

Graphics matters just like any part of a game depends on the game though like you wouldn't want photorealistic graphics on a platformer. It just doesn't matter like the other parts of a game.

As many people have said, graphics DO indeed matter, but not to the extent of gameplay, controls, and perhaps a story if that's what you're looking for. Ideally, you'd have a game with awe-inspiring graphics and sound, fun gameplay that still makes you want to play it ten or more years after it was made, and a story worthy of a great novel all in one package. However, it's very difficult to excel at everything, so most developers concentrate on polishing one or two elements to their absolute best while still giving some attention to the others. Generally, you want good enough graphics to attract people to the game (but not to the extent that you pull a Crysis and have people whining about not being able to play the game at its most gorgeous settings and still retain smooth framerates), and then good enough gameplay to keep them playing rather than just using it as a benchmark or eye candy. That's generally a safe bet to pull off decent sales out of a title. Of course, some might intentionally reduce graphics fidelity for performance or artistic reasons (look at all the retro-styled games floating around), and as long as the rest of the game is good, that can work too; however, they're probably going after a more niche audience as most gamers nowadays seem to be all about the "HD" and the "next-gen" (which now seems to involve a lot of brown, grey, and eye cancer-inducing amounts of bloom for some reason).

Is it just me or does the games with superior graphics end up being just end up being also superior in gameplay ?

Uncharted: fantastic animations and awesome cover system = awesome gameplay + graphics.

Killzone 2: Realistic animations, extra realistic mechanics = awesome gameplay + graphics.

GeoW: extra awesome cover system, cool gore **** = awesome gameplay + graphics.

MGS4: where should I start = awesome gameplay + graphics.

Another point: "Gameplay" makes the game fun to play, "Graphics" makes the game fun to look at, it's just a matter of what kind of person the player is.
