I don't know if Jeff is the best place to go on opinions concerning story, if that's what you're on the fence about.
Don't know where you're coming from on that, but I agreed with him on KZ 2 so his reaction to 3 will probably be a good enough indicator for me.[QUOTE="topgunmv"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]If Jeff continues liking the SP I might buy this after all. Well, I think he can still tell bad dumb action from good dumb action. But then I liked Modern Warfare 2's story, so maybe I just have bad taste too. :P[QUOTE="topgunmv"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"] Don't know where you're coming from on that, but I agreed with him on KZ 2 so his reaction to 3 will probably be a good enough indicator for me.Cherokee_Jack

Same, and every now and then written reviews don't tell the whole story. Sometimes it's obvious a reviewer will score a game high due to technical proficiency more so than their enjoyment for the game.[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="topgunmv"]

Jeff really digs that kind of stuff.

I see what Mr. Vanord meant by an awful story now. Eesh, those cutscenes were the very definition of trying too hard :(.
The training sequence was neat up until that awkward reveal, then rewind to the past.
Upparoom
I can't count how many amazing movies have started exactly like that. it totally surprised me as well.

So you're saying he'll automatically give it 5 stars because it has good graphics? I'm not following the reasoning here.[QUOTE="topgunmv"][QUOTE="W1NGMAN-"] Same, and every now and then written reviews don't tell the whole story. I said it has the flavor of gore centered gameplay that he likes, and he might overlook a lot of faults because of it.
Nothing wrong with it, since I'm sure he'd say as much on the bombcast.

Watch his gears of war review.
I'm not seeing him focus on the gore-centered gameplay in either of his Gears reviews. He mentions the chainsaw once or twice and that's pretty much it. I probably wouldn't have given Gears a 9.6, but it was a great game and I don't think you need to be obsessed with gore to give it a score like that.[QUOTE="topgunmv"][QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"] I don't remember any incident like that in the past, but okay.Cherokee_Jack

Then he says the story is nonexistant, maybe a paragraph in the manual.
9.6

Suddenly this game about meathead space marines shooting aliens needs an elaborate story?
The game worked just fine with the story it had.

So your point is that when Jeff recognizes a game has great gameplay and also has story that's not obstructive nor elaborate it's still good? That's how all professional game reviewers should work. A game can be enticing beyond story reasons, so it's totally cool if the devs wanna make the game compelling through gameplay rather than story.No.1 The twist at the start was obvious if you've played the campaign demo.
No.2 they are trying way too hard to be like naughty dog by showing the middle of the game at the start and working backwards, also they are trying to give little funny dialogue moments to the characters like Uncharted.
and No.3 the guy playing the game absolutely sucks. he hasn't a clue what he's doing half the time and for guys who "work" in videogames they couldn't even remember what the control or cover scheme was like in KZ2.
