Gaming is dead

It is to me anyway. I don't know if its a symptom of becoming a grumpy old git or an industry problem at large. Gaming today sucks. Whether its the endless stream of broken, half assed shite that is pumped out. The deplorable practise of micro-transactions in full priced titles or the fact that games are just boring now.

Picture this, I'm well off. I can buy what I want, when I want yet even after buying a PS4 and an X1, both of which stand unused and unloved. The X1 gets a very occasional run to be play Forza before I get bored in less than an hour. I have over £2800 in video cards alone and yet I have no desire to play games with them. Nothing interests me. I've got a Steam list bigger than many and yet I find myself playing a game that is a simulator of what I do for a god dam living! I have UC4 still in its plastic wrapping from when I got it from Amazon.

Everytime there is something new coming out, I'm checking out the previews, listening to reviewers on Youtube, watching gameplay videos, discussing it on forums etc yet when I actually buy the game or get the chance to I bail. It sits there, unopened... Why? All the hype and yet I have zero urge to actually play them...

New games like Horizon, new consoles like the Switch, new video cards like the GTX1080Ti. I'll buy them yet they'll never be used. Aside from the latter because I'll put that on Folding At Home duty.

Even old consoles from the days where I couldn't get enough games no longer hold my interest. I had the chance to buy a PS2 yet I passed. 15 year me would be all over that.

So, SW I ask of you... Is this a problem with me or the industry? Is anyone else in the same boat? Having once invested thousands of hours into videos games and now can barely stomach 4 hours a week?

Well, I'm afraid I have to say the problem is you.

The industry, in terms of games, is in its best form, tons of games are coming out, consisting of AAA games and Indie games, the former usually offer sth expectable with an awesome presentation and the latter is where creativity shines.

My suggestion is that limit your exposure to previews and reviews and stuff, just go with the ones which you feel like you'll have a great time, and try out indie games as they're so fresh with new ideas that might reignite your passion.

Sounds like it's just a problem with you which is very unfortunate. Perhaps you're just burnt out and need a break or maybe you're just no longer interested in gaming. I've been an avid gamer for about 40 years now and I'm enjoying it now as much as I've ever had, in some ways perhaps more. My problem now is that I don't have enough time to play all the games that I want to play.

Take a break. Nothing wrong with checking back in when a game comes along that renews your drive. Too much gaming can be a bad thing.

Trying taking a break or playing something retro (like 3rd or 4th gen games, not ps2). I had a similar problem several years ago, but doing those things did the trick for me.

I really enjoyed GTA V even if by the end I was totally just rushing to finish the game. But the controls for planes totally sucked. The freedom allowed in zelda makes GTAV feel so limited by comparison. Why can't I climb this building? WHY? WHY GTAV? Zelda lets me climb everything!!! RAWR!!

I been gaming since 1993, I'm 31, (will be 32 this May) when I was a kid, I liked games that were fun, just as I do now. Starcraft, THPS, Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, timesplitters, Halo, Killzone, ect. Maybe that's just how games were back then when it means to having fun but I hate to say it but it's maybe YOU that's the problem. Listen, I have a 9 yr daughter, my baby mama living together, I'm a family man doing everything taking care of everything in the house but that doesn't stop me for doing what I do best, playing lots of games.

I see the problem, you don't manage your time, you need to plan ahead what you can play and what you cannot. I own all consoles, handhelds, and my almighty PC and yes, my main machines are PS4/PC at home, my 3DS is used when I'm out of the house and both my Xbox One & Wii U are getting unused but I'm currently playing BotW atm.

I say, take a vacation from all of your gaming, yes there was a point I needed to take a break from gaming and taking a vacation really helps and when you return home for like weeks or month, you'll get the urge to return gaming cause gaming is my number one hobby and I was sooo ready to return gaming after my long hiatus.

Flying controls are fine once you get the hang of it. Mowing down entire lobbies in GTA Online in a jet while Danger Zone is playing on the radio is one of the best things to do in the game.

They have Viagra for that....

I could see someone having this opinion in 2014. That was such a shit year for gaming. But this year has already had so many great releases and we're only halfway through March.

Get yourself a bottle of Macallan 30 year, make a nice fire and game. It'll change your life.

Don't worry, if you stop gaming, you won't be the only person on this forum that doesn't play anything. We have peeps such as Ron, Torm and uninspiredcup that don't play anything either.

Sounds like you're in a slump mate, it happens to all of us regardless of what games are coming out. Sometimes there's nothing to make you want to play. For me it happens when I'm really busy with work, my kids are using up all of my free time and I'm just generally under a lot of pressure. At that point I just can't be arsed playing anything. Usually ends with me spending a couple of hours a week with something like Stellaris or a hex based game where no one else is going to bother me.

But I'm playing Oblivion, the best rpg made.

@clyde46: I know what you mean. Gaming is pretty shitty right now. Look at Nier on PC, it's a shitfest. Devs rarely care about the shit they produce anymore, it's all about money.

I'm not the same, I want to do more gaming, own more games, get a switch. I just don't have the money or time to play all the games I want.

But I do get this sort of fatigue. A lot of this industry, and games in general have become so streamlined that they have become boring.

I want to play games because they are fun, they drawn me in... Not because the game treats me like some ADHD kid that can't have its attention on something for more than 5 seconds. So what a lot of games do is just reward you all the time... While lacking the most important thing: compelling gameplay.

Still, more than enough games out there that are not like that, more than enough developers out there who do new and creative stuff.

RTS and online WW2 shooters are only just making a combat, yeah I doubt I'll get tired of gaming any time soon.

This gen may not be that strong compare to late 90s and early 00s. but tons better than last generation that was complete crap and dumbing down and casualization was at peak and every game was trying to be COD.

Now every game has to be open world which suck too.

Sounds like you are going through a phase where nothing interests you in gaming now. Its happened to me in the past, I've taken breaks from gaming before and usually I would turn to other forms of entertainment like binging on a TV series or watching more movies, going out more, etc.

For me I like to do a lot of cardio exercise and that helps me enjoy gaming more.....like when I come back from a 1 hour jog, I love playing games. I need to rest anyways, might as well game. I feel awesome, brain is filled with endorphins and I gotta eat and drink after, while I game :)
