I know, they will die out like Blockbuster, but we'll lose something that most of us feel we don't need, cause we're so smart and know what we want, but there are countless clueless parents who don't know shit, who aren't gonna waste their time. Like the parents I saw today at GameStop, all of them were buying their little kids probably their first consoles. Seeing how well GameStop helped these kind of parents today, I have a new found appreciation for them.

Maybe Best Buy or Target could have been plenty helpful, but GameStop employees were going over everything, from how to scratch the Roblox cards, all the things they gonna need, literally giving kids lessons about playing online and how to report mean people, and just went over so many small details, if I wasn't so blown away, I would have died waiting in line.

Had these parents gone to Walmart or Sams Club, it would have been hell, they wouldn't have known shit. We're talking parents who are like "just get everything you need cause I ain't getting you shit for a year" and "if you get that, then you're shutting up the rest the weekend and leaving me alone".

I just hope that in 20 years Moms will still have places like GameStop to take kids to buy their first console, cause in this day and age, you can't just buy a Nintendo for Christmas. I can only imagine my Mom trying to buy me the Xbox when 4-7 years old.

It's going to shut down dude. Accept it and move on. Everyone has a phone and Google on it, we don't need human interaction to do anything anymore.

I don't think that's going to be a saving grace for the business. It's like going to the phone book to find a number, when your smartphone is in your pocket.

At this point, GameStop is a specialty shop. I know they could easily stay in business and even thrive, but likely not with current model of doing things. I think Best Buy can replace them with ease, of course they tried with the rewards card and magazine, I just don't think people want to drive to Best Buy for games, its not like its a TV.

The only way I see physical stores just for games or mostly for games, is having stations for people to try shit. Cause you go to Best Buy to get your TV, so that you can compare and see it. Well, what is point in going to Game Stop to buy a new game, when all you can see is the box, and maybe ask a random person if they played it, and that's it. When at home, I can look at same box, ask strangers who actually played it, and watch videos and shit and get it in 2 day prime.

I wasn't implying we need people to tell us what to watch or Moms can't do it themselves. But half the shit out there is marketed to people too busy to do shit. GameStop is probably only staying afloat cause Moms/caretakers are generally too busy.

I'm convinced Target and Best Buy will replace GameStop, as if the digital future hasn't already killed them.

Nah let it die. Their sales sucked anyways. Their trade ins were rip offs for the most part.

Let games go fully digital to cut costs.

Physical is cheaper than digital though, and only having 1 place to buy your games will never create competition and thus digital will remain high.

@i_p_daily: How is physical cheaper? You need to manufacture the disk and case. Also there are a lot of different stores that sell keys (albeit more limited on consoles but still some 3rd parties exist)

Cheaper for the consumer is what i'm talking about.

Lets take a look at say DMC5 on the marketplace its $99 and yet I can walk into a store and buy it now for $69 before it goes up to $79 which is still cheaper than digital.

There is no excuse for digital to be so expensive and yet its way higher in price over physical where there is a middle man packaging etc.

@i_p_daily: Wow those prices are whack. Digital is either same price or cheaper where I'm at. I read about it being same price to maintain parity with physical releases but I'm not sure exactly why.

For PC at least, you can buy some games from key sellers like GMG for near $20 off at launch.

I'm not talking PC i'm talking console.

Here I can get DMC5 for $69

Yet on Xbox live marketplace its $99.95 & on PSN its again $99.95

And if where you're from they are about the same price its still BS as digital should be at least $10-20 cheaper.

When it comes to media I gotta have something in my hands for my money. Giving the game companies full control over distribution of games would be a nightmare. Physical is good for the hobby it's keeps the game companies from gouging us with prices. I've already seen it with PSN and even Steam to a degree. They rarely lower prices but Steam does have sales from time to time. PSN just gouges the hell out of people.

And that's why I won't be going all digital until the prices are better.

Would be better if parents looked things up on the internet like the rest of us instead of helping a shitty store like Gamestop stay alive.

Clueless parents are probably Gamestop's #1 customer. And since they're clueless, Gamestop can take a much higher price for everything. I also don't dare to think about how much money Gamestop staff has tricked grandparents to pay over the years, or from children who trades in their older things for 2% of what they're worth on ebay.

An absolutely disgusting store that should die a quick and horrible death.

Well DMC5 is $79.99 on the Canadian PS4 store and the same for a physical copy on Amazon, so while the digital version is the same as the physical version it still shouldn't be, it should be at least $20 cheaper, and digital is a rort, just a slightly less of a rort than here.

And when comparing physical versions between me & you, then you guys are getting ripped off.

@i_p_daily: Yup, physical and digital are the same price here (except when you factor in tax). That's why I buy physical on consoles.

I only go digital on PC since you get deals right from launch (dmc v is $60 on pc vs $80 PS4) and occasionally on consoles if there is a big store sale.

To be fair there is hardly any physical PC game releases anymore, so you really have no choice with PC, and as a console gamer I never want that to happen.

My last physical PC purchase was Diablo 3 and from their, I just went digital cause I got tired of having to shelve too many physical games from consoles & PC. I went full blown digital at the start of this gen and couldn't be even more happier! The only physical game I still buy is on any Nintendo consoles and Amazon shopping makes it easier so I won't need to walk into Gamestop.

@saltslasher:

I've accepted the inevitable but I've actually seen plenty of examples like you mentioned in real life too. Sadly, those things are out of our control. So all we can do is wait and watch.

I know what it's like to have a child who wants to start playing videogames. But luckily, I already know enough about it to understand what would be good or bad for her. But other parents don't have that advantage and so, they seek help from other people. Well if they want to let their kids get into gaming, then it's up to them to research how they want to go about it. And that's how it always will be, Gamestop or not.

So in the end, this doesn't really change anything. It's just that uninformed parents will now have to seek alternative means to gather information about getting their kids into gaming. It's not rocket science, anyway. Our current videogame consoles have just about all the tools you need to monitor your children while they play.

People bash on Gamestop because they think that Gamestop is the only place to buy games or they've only shopped at Gamestop and got ripped off.

I don't hate (and really, "hate" is a strong word I don't like using) Gamestop and don't want to see them go out of business or anything like that. That said, I prefer not to shop there mainly because I can't buy a game without them wanting me to buy, sign up for a bunch of different things. I just want to buy my games, go home and play it. I know that the employees are required to do this but I find it really annoying and at the start of this gen, I went full blown digital and I couldn't be even more happier this way. I like Amazon, no sales pitches and heck, I don't even need pants to shop at Gamestop :)

But since I went fully PC gaming, I now never need to walk into anyplace else buying physical games anymore and despite I still buy physical games on Nintendo, (Switch) Amazon has that cover.

Something to be said, I however will go and shop at "Retro gaming store" I have in my area for older games I still play like N64 and such.

I don’t shop at GameStop/EB often but I don’t want to see them go out of business mainly because I greatly prefer to get my games on physical format.

Will it really die, though? I mean, physical movies are still around... LPs and CDs are still around... I say physical games will ONLY die if the console manufacturers stop putting a physical mean for loading games.

Some people still like physical media, I say physical will not die, it'll simply be less manufactured.

9 times out of 10 I can walk into a Gamestop, buy a game used for cheaper than it is on Amazon and I don't have to wait. I love Gamestop and pretty much buy all of my games there unless I just have to go online. Long live Gamestop because digital is way overpriced and I'd rather buy used as opposed to paying full price for shit that came out years ago.

@valgaav_219: Problem is, you can buy used in other places like Best Buy too. Gamestop doesn't offer anything that you can't find elsewhere which doesn't bode well for the business.

@XVision84: I had no idea Best Buy sold used. I still would probably go to Walmart before going there tbh and I still doubt they'll have the same amount of used games and price ranges when comparing their used games with Gamestops. Around Black Friday and Xmas I'm at Gamestop getting critically acclaimed PS4 games 4 for $20.

@valgaav_219: @XVision84: GameStop posts $488 million loss for last quarter and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Digital is on the rise and I always find deals on Steam, GoG, or even the goody good Humble Bundle, I find lots of games on sales through digital. While Gamestop is facing losses, they need to adapt digital trade-in games before it's too late.

I dunno... There are a lot of Mom's out there.

If they needed it I would think GameStop wouldn't be struggling so much.

There are plenty of other surviving businesses built around the needs of mothers.

I agree, unless consoles are devoid of means to read game data physically, physical games will stay. But I don't know if Sony/MS/Nintendo will want this to happen, they clearly like selling those boxes and discs.

Gangstop it almost alway a filthy store inside. To put a faith in a employee who it told to swindle customer it not so good to be that thing.

I'll never understand the hate for Gamestop?

Me neither. I recently bought a used copy of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate from GameStop and saved $25 compared to buying it new. What's there to hate about that?

@i_p_daily: Sorry mate, you guys are getting ripped off :P

$99 is crazy for one game

@i_p_daily: Canada ?

Why pay Canadian in-store prices when you could buy from an Amazon seller in the US? Wouldn't the conversion rate still be cheaper?

@i_p_daily: I used to think like that, but eventually I stopped caring for physical releases. I don't mind a full digital future at all.

Well i'm the opposite as I will never embrace a full digital world, that's why i'm rooting for this all digital XB1 to fail.
