The most recent example for me are the Bayonetta games. They made much better at controls and doing combos. It also taught me patience which helps me from not resorting to button mashing. I noticed this recently with fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Smash. I've been much better post my Bayonetta days. What about you, SW? What games have made you a better gamer?

This is the game that taught me to press down and jump at the same time to drop below an obstacle in a side scrolling game. The rest is history.

I'm actually being serious.

TF2, Bayonetta 2, and I guess Final Fantasy V? That was one of the first JRPG's I actually went all out on until I defeated the superbosses after the final boss.

The Boob Simulator..... pretty much did for ne what Bayonetta did for you.

And DiRT 2 taught me to balance the throttle and the steering.

President Evil 5 helped me improve my aiming.... and made me a better team player.

Disney Infinity.... making mini games naturally makes you better at playing them.

Portal 2..... I don't know.... it taught me something.

Plus I'm always a winner :).

For sure. There are many games that upped my skills, but Ninja Gaiden broke the mould.

Also, Counter-Strike and Quake 3 as far as shooters go.

Ninja Gaiden, Black and 2, because they encourage skill.

CoD 2, because the achievements are only really available on the vetran difficulty, so it started me off challenging myself at higher difficulties.

Halo 3, I discovered Heroic difficulty is just really fun.

Because of these, I now tend to play many games on higher difficulties, or a difficulty that provides me with more of a challenge. But only on games I think are worth it, fair and balanced.

I think I'd have to go with Myth, Civ 4, Battletoads, Super Mario Bros 3, Mega Man 2, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Ninja Gaiden, Medieval 2: Total War, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Arcade Game.

I have no idea what game made me a better gamer.

Bayonetta is way to easy then DMC 1 or DMC 3 but the DMC games are less hard then Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Probably a lot, but the most immediate and noticeable jumps in skill that I ever had were after playing MUSHA, Mega Man 2 (hard), Streets of Rage 2 (mania), and Halo CE (legendary).

Oh yeah? In what way? Was it the puzzle solving when you were younger?

I adore A Link to the Past. It's the most timeless Zelda ever made. I'd say it defined great game design for me at an early age. I measured almost everything up to it.

I'd also credit Punch-Out!! with developing patience and reflexes. I think this series more than any other teaches the basic building blocks of high level gaming.

Day of Defeat taught me how to play an FPS game

RtCW taught me how play as part of an organised team

World or Warcraft helped me with some real life skills, organising 160 people running several 40 man and 25 man raids multiple times a week. There are very few games that need that level of organisation. I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into running some of the large EVE corporations with several thousand members.

Tyson's punchout, for sure. I beat Mike Tyson. Something, as stupid as it is I'm still proud of. Honestly, don't think I could do it today. Job, responsibilities, etc.

GLQuake MP as far as reflexes go.

Add also the Reaper Bot for practicing offline in GLQuake. I don't think I ever won a practice deathmatch against a bunch of Reaper Bots at the hardest settings.

@clone01:

Which is why game design from that era never gets old. People challenged themselves to get better.
