GTA 4 doesn't exactly have a happy ending. Some of the charecters in Dynasty Warriors games die in the end. Call of Duty 4 had a pretty unhappy ending aswell.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Mafia!? I loved that ending, you thought everything was fine and okay and that guy you played as was going to live happily ever after. Then BAM, Don Salleri sends his regards.

I'd love one of those Halo/Gears type games, where it's humans vs. impossible alien odds. And humans get completely annihilated. It'd be a nice change of pace from "OMG WE SOMEHOW WON!!!".

you lose at the end of bioshock because it sucks so bad compared to the rest. erm... can't really think of any TBH. there are some good endings to STALKER though, you can get false ones but im not sure if you can die...

Kinda like, win the battle but lose the war?? I like that idea, but then again some one could make a game let you play as an alien. and win so that would be a good ending :P ..

They are never going to do that if they want to make a sequel, and lets face it what developer doesnt want to make a sequel to a successful game....

P.S. I am pissed with a lot of you for ruining the ending of games I have yet to play (STALKER, Bioshock and Mafia).

Spoilers for a certain xbox live arcade platformer where time happens to play an important part ahead!!
Braid definitely. You find out that you were the bad guy the whole time, due to your overwhelming obsession with the princess, and the princess escapes in the hands of a knight in armor. Of course that's only the surface story. If you bother to dig a bit deeper there is a whole other meaning to the whole game, which might blow your mind.
Exactly. Like you have fought so hard, killed so many enemies, but in the end the odds are just too great. Like I had an idea for a game, where an alien ship attacks Earth. It'd have a totally epic 20 hour campaign, with every nation on Earth hurling absolutely everything at it. Eventually winning after taking horrific casualties and damage. Everyone is standing around smiling, saying "We did it!". Then, whoom! Hundreds more ships appear in the sky. Shot of everyone despairing. THE END!

I think it's good :P

Oh also Rayman 2, the great escape. Awesome game with a fake ending. It comes from the one eyed creature (forget name and level) who you race to his loot. If you beat him he gives you the option to continue fighting the robot pirates or take his loot. If you take the loot you become a lazy fat sack of crap on a desert island.

FEAR Extraction Point carried a good ending.

STALKER did too. The wish to make the Zone disappear and the other wish to control humanity.

Well with Braid, if you didn't get all the stars and just beat all the levels and put together the puzzles, then you don't really win. If you get all the stars then you seemingly have won, but following the story, winning isn't a good thing in this case.

Turning Point Fall of Liberty had a ending where you die in the end, but after playing that game I welcomed death. COD4 was an awesome end and mid game scene both of which were not happy.

I have an idea about a game where the protagonist dies at the end of the trilogy...

I'm really proud of the idea. It's a pretty original concept, and would maybe be controversial. But yeah, I'm not telling anybody. I would really like to copyright it and sell it someday, lol. That would be sweet.

Yeah that's one of the reasons why Halo 3's story disappointed me. It turned out that defeating the convenant was a lot easier than the first Halo let on. Overwhelming odds and eventual lose ftw. Although, I wouldn't mind there being a small victory in the end, similar to the movie 300; where the humans have one last glorious stand off, in which a relatively small army of humans fend off an endless wave of aliens. Another cool ending would be humanity getting enslaved/assimilated, instead of killed off, and they learn to accept their fate with open arms, kind of like the assimilation many native americans into western culture. It would be powerful and a unique twist for sure.

STALKER, "I want to be rich!" One of the worst endings (tied with a few others in that game). You lose in all of them but two, and one you're [spoilers] essentially helping the antagonist(s). [end spoilers]
