For those who are interested in Descent like 360 degree of freedom like game may remember Forsaken. The developers made the game open source for a while and has many bug fixes to run on modern OSes and supports up to 1080P. It was a AAA title when it was released back in 1998 and was one of the first games to use 32-bit color rendering and was heavily promoted by nVidia as their first 32 bit color GPU was the Riva TNT.
