Fallout 76 is free to play on PS4, Xbox and PC until Monday the 18th, if you dare

Starting at noon ET on Thursday, May 14, and running through noon on Monday, May 18, players can download and play Fallout 76 — and its expansions, including the most recent, Wastelanders, for free on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.

Current players will earn double experience points for the length of the free trial weekend.

Critics and many players were not kind to Fallout 76 when it initially launched. The game had several bugs and the multiplayer focus didn’t sit well with many longtime fans of the game. Bethesda immediately acknowledged the criticisms and got to work improving the game. The culmination of that work is Wastelanders, which overhauled the in-game world of Appalachia, adding human NPCs, and new quests.

The expansion has been widely praised, with IGN saying “Fallout 76 is starting to feel like a true Fallout game. … New human NPCs bring a healthy dose of personality and interaction to the world and the new storyline is far more engaging because of them.”

So it seems like the Lame of the Year has been improved and fixed. And apparently the overhauled game might actually be sorta....good?

Nah. This game has no appeal to me and I hear nothing but bad things about it. The big update just came out and people are so unimpressed that they are doing free play days. It smell desperate.

I saw some streams play it on public servers. You literally never see anyone run around, the game is a ghost town. People wanted a solo experience, well, they got it lol. So at the end of the day, you got a solo mmo. An mmo with all its inconveniences that is played alone. What a massive failure, like holy shit, Bethesda. Only Anthem is EVEN more of a shitshow than FO76 is.

Is that even enough time to make any significant progress in a grindy online RPG?

I took the chance and played it for a few hours today. The exploration is great and has always been Bethesda's strong point. The rest is just mediocre. Didn't feel any motivation whatsoever to treat it like an online game.

I'll do some more quests and wandering around tomorrow but I highly doubt I'll invest any money into buying the game afterwards.
