What they should seriously do is make a smaller map. Set the game in High Rock or Elsweyr, and spend a lot of time detailing unique locations.

I know they'll do the opposite, because "5 times bigger than Skyrim" is a better soundbite than "twice as dense and detailed as Skyrim".

Since the PS4 has 8GB of RAM which is extremely impressive for a console, next generation of Elder Scrolls would be much bigger and detailed. That amount of RAM would unlock much more possibilities for the next generation. But... since it's Bethesda, they will be buggy as usual.

Well Dagerfall was around 487,000 km2. So it's still scalled down quite a bit.

[QUOTE="Planeforger"]It's not going to be a huge graphical leap upwards, since the next set of console's technology isn't going to be vastly better than what PC gamers currently have. Think closer to the jump between Oblivion and Skyrim, if that's anything to go by.

Doubt your theory holds much water. Especially with the focus on a lot of RAM, even a massive texture upgrade is going to do wonders for the next Elder Scrolls, and it probably won't have to fit on a DVD9 this time, so as long as they have the manpower, their art assets are potentially going to be great-looking.

Yeah, but there are still returns to be had on scaling back, especially with the tech eating up more resources than ever (to say nothing of next gen)

Doesn't the PS4 have 8GB of RAM? That isn't much

RAM isn't that important for running games anyway.

That could possibly be a good idea, especially if they remove fast travel. Fast travel renders map sizes rather meaningless.

You forget that Oblivion and Skyrim had to cater to 512MB RAM. In the case of the PS3, 256 dedicated to video. When your baseline is rumored to be Durango's 8GB DDR3, that's a bigger pool to throw all your graphics around, especially in an open world game like Elder Scrolls where RAM made the console versions look like poo (LOD, for example). I'm pretty much speculating anyway. For all I know, most of that RAM is set aside for that PS4 sharing feature and other OS processes, and perhaps only a measly amount is dedicated to game processes.

I think it's safe to assume that it'll be fantastic visually, but bug ridden from a gameplay standpoint. Perhaps Bethseda will wise up and QA the next entry.

OhSnapitz

The better comparison would be MORROWIND vs Oblivion, If Skyrim was released in 2006, Not even Gears would've had a chance,
Here's how TES6 going to look like.

The screens i posted are nothing special, I still expect WAY better graphics than the ones i posted, I mostly think they'll focus on the Physics, And put some simulated blades of grass like the ones in Crysis 3.

If they put that crappy MMO vomit version of Elder Scroll to next-gen consoles, the franchise will fall to new lows like Dragon Age.

Mainly because the worlds are huge and empty, which might not be the case if they narrowed the focus.

It will look good.

I expect near CGI-quality graphics.

But the gameplay will probably be even more streamlined than Skyrim.

Altho the game world could be the biggest yet.

FFXV looks close and it's real-time so...

p.s.: why it's so hard for you hermits to admit that Sony made an impressive piece of tech, btw?

I mean, you can criticize the PS4 in it's games and stuff but it's hardware is not one of the things that can be criticized, imho...

Good luck rendering that in realtime.  Let alone on a 1-year-old midrange card.

Noone said it will look exactly like CGI.

That's obviously impossible.

But the thing is also that you don't need millions upon millions of polygons that CGI uses to create an impressive look.

That Final Fantasy tech demo is proof of this and it ran on a single GTX 680 and will likely run on the PS4 with optimizations.

Impressive graphics =/= Modern CGI.  It's not even close.

The FF tech demo ran in realtime at 1080p 60 fps with many prebaked effects.  It also looks nothing like modern CGI.  Of course it will run on the PS4.

Tech unknowledgable people would easily confuse that demo for pre-rendered CGI...

Fact is, most people don't notice the finer details and only care that it "looks good".

Of course CGI will always be an ideal, but the borders of visual diffence between CGI and real-time graphics are slowly blurring, as technology improves. (of course CGI is improving too, I'm just saying there's not as big difference as it once was, i.e. compare something like Mario 64 to something like Toy Story)

It's nice that you are still taking things I wrote out of context but keep being ignorant if that suits you...

edit: and yes, those two pics looks very similar to the average viewer.

Most couldn't tell that the 2nd pics uses far more polygons (in the millions' range) opposed to the first pic, which likely uses a few hundred thousand polys for the models.

Doesn't really matter how good it looks.

All the graphical mods in the world didn't stop Skyrim from getting boring.
