I played PC games between 2000 and 2005, didn't own any of the consoles. Then my hardware started falling so far behind the times that I couldn't play new games at all, so I picked up a GameCube. It was cool, but unsatisfying compared to what I saw all my friends playing on their PS2s and XBoxes. So I bought my friend's fat PS2 and sold my GC soon after.
About a year later, in the summer of 2006, on a friend's suggestion, I picked up a used XBox. It wasn't just my friend's suggestion--I was super disappointed with Sony's E3 2006 showing, and I wanted to get a taste of what the XBox had been like. I fell in love with it, and suddenly 360 seemed a lot more appealing.
Nowadays I'm not sure what to do, because the 360's got great games NOW and more on the way, and its price is a little less ridiculous than the PS3's, but 360s have this weird habit of melting. Until there's some dramatic change that fixes this problem, or until Sony drops the price of the 60GB PS3 to $400, I can't seriously entertain the idea of buying either of the high-end consoles.
