Didn't AC unity get developed by multiple developers?

Ubisoft has recruited another one of its studios to help develops the upcoming open-world third-person shooter The Division.

Ubisoft Annecy, which got its start working on Rayman 2 and previously worked on games like Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Assassin's Creed II's multiplayer mode, is now also working on the Division, Ubisoft has announced.

“The team in Annecy is delighted to be collaborating with Massive, Red Storm and Reflections on Tom Clancy’s The Division,” Ubisoft Annecy Studio Manager Rebecka Coutaz said. “We are bringing our previous experience in multiplayer online games and this project is allowing us to build our technical knowledge in other areas and become experts on this incredible brand. The collaboration with the other studios is going very smoothly, and we’re working together to ensure we meet and exceed the high expectations players have for this new title.”

The Division is being helmed by Massive Entertainment. We already knew it was getting help from developer Red Storm, which previously worked on games like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Reflections, which most recently worked on racing game The Crew.

The company didn't say what Ubisoft Annecy specific role will entail, but collaborating with the studio makes sense given The Division's emphasis on online multiplayer.

The Division launches this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, though a specific release date has not been announced.

Wasn't MCC also made by 4 diff studios? That should tell you everything you need to know about how this game will run online.

As long as the game development is being controlled and QA'd by one company, in this case Massive, then multiple studios working on one game is not a bad thing. Actually it's very common with larger games.

Star Citizen for example is being made by C.I.G. Santa Monica, C.I.G. Austin, Foundry 42 - Manchester, Foundry 42 -Frankfurt, Behaviour Interactive, Ilfonic and Moon Collider. Additional Studios are or have been involved on the game production are Turbulent, Rmory, CGBot, Imaginarium and Voidalpha. then they have a tech exchange agreement with Warhorse studios for the character customisation tech being implemented in Kingdom Come Deliverance. They've also had a lot of help (early on) from Crytech but that was before they head hunted a lot of the talent and formed Foundry 42 - Frankfurt. This isn't a problem because the project has very strong leadership (and over 500,000 alpha testers)

Looking forward to this game. They can bring as many studios in to work on it as they want. Must have a lot of content.

That's a lot of developers to downgrade a single game.

A lot of games are made by multiple studios. I get the feeling people haven't heard of outsourcing. You usually don't hear it, but chances are the game you're playing right now was made by multiple studios.

Check this out.

This doesn't imply a broken game. Sometimes different studios are needed because of a certain expertise they have. In this case, it's multiplayer. There are also studios needed to port games to other platforms, which is most likely happening here.

Remember AC Unity? On Xbox One, one of the many patches required you to download THE ENTIRE GAME again! No shit.

Not really...

The fact that MCC was a mess online wasn't because it was made by multiple studios. That's a fairly common tactic in recent years.

It was a mess because it attempted to bring together like 4 different game engines and netcodes, dating back to 2001, and throw them into 2014 with an HD graphics makeover. It was a Herculean task.

I would take that as a red flag after the MCC. Just wait a day or two after the game releases for reviews and forum comments to see how the game plays before buying it.

You do realize that most games these days are developed by multiple studios right (especially big publishers with internal studios)? Even single studio games have tasks that are outsourced on a regular basis. I don't even know why an article was made about this as it is common practice.
