Did Gamespot severely underrate DK Tropical Freeze?

First off, the game is gorgeous. People complaining about Wii U need to take a look at this game. Gameplay wise, it's a blast to play and the Gamepad works great. Level design is really cool, don't know how the reviewer saw it as dull or derivative. In terms of difficulty, doesn't seem too bad unless you completely suck at platformers. Also, the music is great. Did you agree with the GS review?

Yes, I believe they did but at the same time the score they gave is a part of a bigger agenda of marking down games with minimal changes to existing franchises even if they're otherwise solid.

I don't know what it was, but I just couldn't get into Tropical Freeze. I love platformers. I thought DKCR was awesome, one of the best platformers last gen which says a lot.

TF just didn't lock me in.

But yeah 5/10 is pretty fucking harsh. GS has given tons of miserable games better scores.

I thought it was 6 or 7 not 5. That's freaking ridiculous when the only thing it did wrong was not doing anything new. Especially when games like CoD still get 8's

Agreed. All these review sites lack consistency though. I get it, bring the hammer down on games that feel more like expansions than sequels, but do it across the board.

I know it's just scores and it doesn't matter at the end of the day, but I do wonder if these people in the gaming media even notice the mountain of double standards and inconsistencies in their work.

No. Being a Nintendo game doesn't automatically entitle it to a good score.

Yes, the reviewer rated the game way too low. And his review was also really short and not in depth.

No. The game looks and plays great. The levels are awesome. The soundtrack is awesome. The difficulty is sweet. I'd give it an 8.5/10.

GS are the lowest score on metacritic but if the reviewer didn't like it that much then what can we do? When you start writing your own reviews then you'll assign the scores you want to the games.

I don't see how the game was "dull and derivative" it was anything but that. The levels just kept changing and there was plenty of variety. I don't see how this game could've scored anything lower than a 7.

And the people saying that being a Nintendo game doesn't entitle it to a good score don't know what they're talking about. No one here is claiming that. Plain and simple, the game is nowhere near a 5. What exactly made it warrant a 5? That to me sounds like a boring or broken/unplayable game. I don't think anyone has said the game should've scored a 9+ and be GOTY. Which is funny when you think back to other times when a certain faction raged at an 8 score and were asking for the reviewers head because he didn't give it a 10, just because it was Naughty "God" game.

I guess it depends. The reviewer seemed very tired of Nintendo's 2D platformers.

He's entitled to his opinion. I've played it a bit and I certainly would not have scored it so low. But that's just me. And he does not need to be me.

I will add this...the game does look beautiful.

A Wii-U is the game system on store shelves that currently has more titles to play than the Xbox One or PS4 combined.....Not to mention the better 1st party titles, wise guy.

People like that should not be allowed to play video games, it's people that can find enjoyment in any game regardless of specs, genre or graphics that are the true gamers.....You just go boot up your PS4 or Xbox One and pull out your mindless FPS and fire away against your other online opponents and leave the really fun games to Nintendo.

Eh, it's just an opinion. Personally I love the game and I'd rate it much higher, but I can see where the reviewer is coming from.

@Slimmin360: I am a person who has played games for 30+ years so the subject of whether I should be "allowed" to play games based on not overrating your sacred cow is laughable. Admitting that I enjoy graphics is not a dirty word to me. It's only become an issue because Nintendo has fallen so far behind the race that damage controllers are acting like graphics don't matter even though they have driven technology for the whole of gaming's lifetime.

Make excuses for your crap console all you want. It has a shallow library and lesser potential thanks to Nintendo cheaping you out. I have found gaming enjoyable on more consoles and computer systems than the majority of people here and to limit all of the others to "mindless FPS's" just exposes you as another bitter Nintendo fanboy crying about his purchase not living up to what was promised by your gods.

In the meantime I'll play all of the best WRPGs, JRPGs, action adventure games, simulation games, sports sims, fighting games, racing games,sandboxers, third person shooters, first person shooters (very low on my list of priorities actually), unique indie titles and the rest on my combination of PS4, PC, PS Vita and eventually, X1, as well as all my retro systems. And you wont. You'll get Nintendo's four franchises of doom and act like it's all you ever wanted.

I don't think I do. I'm having a very good time with the game. It just doesn't excite me as much as Country Returns did, but it's still a lot of fun.

It's time they give DK the Mario treatment and make it a full 3d platformer with innovative ideas, like Galaxy.

I saw GS's latest podcast with Kevin, Tom, and two other editors, they sat there and complain how people were excited that Smash is getting a hardcore mode. Then they go off into a Nintendo roast, and go completely off topic and pointing out every flaw in the company (while praising yearly releases from ubisoft). So I would say yes, their editors are in a mode right nowm where whatever Nintendo does, they will hate on it, because they didn't get what they want. They also failed to mention Tomodachi Life or Bravely Default, one made by Nintendo and one published by Nintendo. Why is that important? Because Tomodachi Life is a new IP, (because Nintendo never makes new IPs...), and Bravely Default was one of Nintendo's biggest hit titles this year, despite not being developed by them.

@bbkkristian: how can they even complain about For Glory in SSB4, it's an additional mode in online that doesn't affect your enjoyment of For Fun or online play with friends whatsoever

Yes. But not by as much as I thought originally. And the reviewers points aren't well explained.

Imo, I think about a 7.5 for the game is fair. Its good, but its really a wash between the first and second game. Something about the level design is off. It isn't as well constructed or fluent as the first game. Its a good romp but overall not a very memorable entry.
