Consoles will soon have terrible names. Catastrophe awaits...

Console names work now. Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii are all short concise and catchy names that peole remenber. However, the future doesn't look so bright. We are about to expierence a catastrophe in video game names.

PS3:

The name sounds great now. 3 is a good, wholesome number that sounds like the final part in a trilogy, the climax of the story. The next generation everyone expects to be names the PS4, which doesn't sound nearly as good (4 is also and unlucky number in Japan). Thing get progressevely worse from there. In 2040 we'll be playing Final Fantasy 56 on the horribly named PS8.

Xbox 360:

The future is even worse for the 360. Sure 360 sounds great now because it represents a full revolution in gaming (hence 360). But five revolutions later, and your playing the Xbox 2160. Its time for a 800,000 player team deathmatch on Halo 9.

Wii:

Let's just hope Nintendo doesn't follow in the footsteps of the NES and SNES, I just can't take a gaming system named the Super Wii seriously.

What should Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo do to prevent this catastrophe?

Actually, turning 360 degrees leaves you exactly where you were previously. I honestly don't quite understand why Microsoft went with that number. Then again, I don't really understandmost of Microsoft'smarketing strategies.

Conventional thinking suggests that Nintendo should stick with the Wii brand in some way. However, recent history has shown us that Nintendo has abandoned conventional thinking and intend to create a wheel of disruption. Chances are they'll come up with a different name.

Super Wii is awesome, the Xbox has the worst problems when it comes to names because they don't really have a precedent to go on, 720 just sounds lame and doesn't really make much sense.

And the PS has to go with 4 because they have to get at least to 9 so this becomes a reality.

I stopped lauging at the "wii" jokes a long time ago but Super Wii just makes me lol constantly.

PS4 is the only one that sounds decent IMO. I'm not trying to think about next gen, because I doubt it will be here anytime soon and secondly because I don't have teh monies.

I think Sony will keep "Playstation" because it symbolizes success for them, but rename each console under "Playstation." So instead of the "Sony Playstation" it'll be the "Playstation Veridian" or something.

I don't like PS4 either, but if they go with that, maybe they could design a cool logo that substitutes an 'A' in 'PLAYSTATION' with a '4'.

PL4YSTATION... maybe, or PLAYST4TION because it's probably important to keep 'PLAY' intact, and maybe it also makes more sense chronologically.

Somebody once said "QuadStation" which didn't sound so bad to my ears, but I'm sure Sony would want to keep the 'PlayStation' name.

Microsoft named it the Xbox 360 so that you wouldn't have the Xbox 2 going up against the PlayStation 3. Instead, you have a "360" following Xbox, which makes it sound more on par with the PS3. Otherwise, it would seem to any non-gamer that the PS3 is a full generation ahead of the Xbox 2.

Well, I think there is a little bit of confusion here. I agree that continuing the current naming convetions would result in some lame name. I'm just not sure that what we see now is actually signs of a trend. First there was Xbox, then the Xbox 360. Clearly XBOX is the brand name that MS is sticking with. I see no evidence that the numbering is the trend here, so I don't understand why people just assume the next Xbox will be Xbox 720 instead of Xbox Dune or some other subtitle.

The PS3 - PS4 I think is a logically assumption since we've had PLaystation converted to PS1 when the PS2 came out and now there is a PS3. PS4 would be lame, I agree. But again, the brand name is Playstation. Despite the different fonts, the original PS logo has also remained throughout all the different versions. So I could see Sony finally mixing it up. When they first got into the business and the PS1 showed signs of success, they announced a three console plan. No that is over and its time for a new plan. I suspect a new subname is also in the works.

Nintendo has always given every one of their consoles a NEW or different name. However, their handhelds have kept the same names with only minor changes. Gameboy stuck around for a while, and then the DS became DSi and then probably some new DS version is already in the works. I guess this is the dark horse. I hope Nintendo gets back into the console game with something new (and less gimicky)...but I have my doubts. In which case I could definitely see their next console just being a Wii +.
