Stats from the Survey

56.98% of Steam users are using an NVIDIA GPU, while 24.68% are using an AMD/ATI GPU. Moreover 17.89% of Steam users are using an Intel integrated GPU.

77.25% of the survey-takers prefer Intel’s CPUs, while 22.75% prefer AMD’s CPUs.

Regarding the CPU cores that Steam-survey takers use, 47.44% of them own a dual-core CPU, while 45.98% own a quad-core CPU. Only 4.49% has a CPU with more than four CPU cores, and 2.09% is still on a single-core CPU.

Windows 10 remains the most popular OS with 44.93% (increased by 1.99% compared to last month).

PS4 (8 Core) > major steam users (2 Core)

It would seem steam users love to upgrade their OS to windows 10 but don't like upgrading cpu hardware

As for win 10 can't say im a fan or see why they all jumped in on it so fast i've heard some games can't even run on it.

I finally did the upgrade last week right before it no longer came free and I'm upset I waited so long to do it. It's a great OS

8 cores won't see a benefit with PC gaming, 4 is the sweet spot.

I've had 6 cores since 2010 and I'll be on 8 cores by this time next week, but it's not like it's gonna make my games run any better lol.

Pretty sure my old i7 920 dual core beat the PS4 in cpu performance. More cores does not directly translate to better performance or a better cpu for that matter. Otherwise AMD would be killing it right now.

This

My i5 4670k is still considered one of the better gaming CPU's and I have no plans of upgrading until I do a totally new build a year or so from now.

i7 920 is not a dual core, its a quad core with HT so eight threads. The console cpus may have 8 cores but their slower than AMD's quad core cpus from 2009.

8 slow ass cores. They're consoles man, built to run cool in a compact form factor while being affordable.

More cores =/= better for gaming, comparing the CPUs in consoles to even relatively low end PC "gaming" processors is lulzy.

What are those games that look amazing on PC compared to consoles? There seeing more performance using the 7 cores out of 8.

Are you for real right now????

More cores does not equate to greater performance. It would only mean this if the combined output of the cores is greater than the combined output of a competing cpu. In this case, console cpu's are so laughably weak in comparison to aging PC cpu's that it just isn't the case.

Even the old 920 (quad core, thanks 04d). Is putting out a greater workload than the PS4's 8 combined cores.

Try having the PS4 run a totalwar game from the last 8 years and watch it splutter because it can't handle the cpu load. I wouldn't call UC4 a cpu heavy game, at all. It's the same reason why ARMA isn't on consoles, the cpu of consoles is too feable.

PS4 and XB1 has 8 slow-ass cores, whilst even an i3-4150 who has only 2 cores can beat the weak POS.

Troll thread is troll.

EDIT: And that's the problem with the consoles. They have a fairly good GPU(APU) on them, but the slow CPUs are actually the bottlenecks. Plus the fact that slow bandwidth doesn't help either. That's why most game has puke AF whereas it's almost AF is a non-issue on PC hardware/

I think it's because of the glorious 8gb of superchared GDDR5. All these PC gamers are raving about the GTX 1080 which is only just now catching up. Losers.

Yeah, the PC with dual cores are still managing better performance than the consoles, nuff said. Thanks for coming.

Your console cpu's are terribad in comparison to just about every cpu out there including the modern dual cores and quite a few older multicore cpu's.

Yeah.... its not really all that shocking...

Me and everyone of my friends have been using Dual Core CPUs for like... the past 10 years now.... hell they didn't even have multithreading. It was straight up 2 Cores. And you know what..... thats all you need.

I did however get an 8 threaded CPU a few months back because now I actually want to do something else besides playing games.

If you wana be a PC Gamer just dump the majority of your budget into a Graphics Card (preferably nVidia because its more Indipendent) Yes your CPU is going to bottle neck and limit your Famerate but trust me..... Splitting your Budget more evenly between the CPU and GPU is actually going to limit your Famerate even more..... a GTX 980 + dual core CPU combo is still more powerfull than a GTX 960 plus quad Core CPU combo in terms of gaming. Plus you could keep the GTX 980 longer before you would need to upgrade it.

Only worry about your CPU if you actually have some Office Productivity type of work to do.

It feels like you are being deliberately daft.

A cpu with more cores does not automatically make it perform better than cpu's with less cores. You need to look at the overall performance of the two cpu's. This is why most cpu's in PC's can blitz thsoe in consoles despite having less cores. The consoles CPU's are more cores with less performance, while most PC's have less cores but far greater performance.

I thought we cleared this shit up in 2012.

THOSE ARE GPU COMPUTS UNITS !!!.....

I believe the actually CPU core count is 4.....

Yeah.... its not really all that shocking...

And even a cheap dual core like the i3-6100 has hyper threading, so you're getting 4 fast "cores" on it. It's even still overkill for many games.

Those users who preferred amd processors are idiots. I have one, and I know amd cpus cannot touch intel ones.

One of many indications for the current economic conditions.

Whoa, Ron getting political here. But, I'd have to say he's right.

Out-source enough jobs outside the western countries, expect weaker consumer market.

http://www.pressherald.com/2016/02/04/food-stamps-still-feed-more-than-45-million-americans-despite-economic-recovery/

45 million / 318.9 million = ~14 percent.

Australia has a population size of 24.1 million.

PC gaming is a "want" not a "need"...

Sony unlocks PS4’s 7th core, paves way for better performance

Read more at

Game developers now have access to more of the Sony PS4’s raw power, according to data emerging over the weekend.

The gaming giant has unlocked the 7th Core of the PS4’s 8-Core CPU, after previously reserving it for the console’s operating system.

The move was confirmed by other members of the developer community who spoke to Eurogamer.

The site did say it was unlikely existing games would gain access to the core, thus boosting performance of titles already available. However, it might come in handy for devs working on new titles for the console.

No, they actually are 8 cores. They're slow cores, but they're actual cores.

You really have to Admire the IPC on those Skylake CPUs and I thought Haswell was Fast..... and their Hyperthreading is really impressive I'd don't think I've ever seen Intel be so effecient.... :)

If you are actually being serious here, what point are you trying to make? That having more slow cores is faster than having less equally slow cores? I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you there lol.

LoL.... they're not idiots.... they're simply on a Budget.

If you want to just compare Performance then intel is going to win every time at least until Zen comes out.... assuming the rumors are true.

But if you factor in Costs then AMD does yield better Value in specific Performance Brackets. In my case I had a choice between the FX-8320 and the i3 6300.... in my country they are roughly the same price and the fact that a Dual Core 4 Hyperthreaded Intel CPU is only inches behind the 8 "Core" (I know its not really 8 cores) AMD CPU is definitely cause for concern...... but seeing as their the same price... I bought the AMD.

Because unlike Console Gamers.... brand loyalty in the World of PC Gaming is not as rampant. PC Gamers get whatever fits their needs.

Thats why you barely see shit like this:

Intel Fanboy: "Boooooyaaaa !!!!! the i7 5960X toasted your lil AMD 8350 !!!"

Then goes out and buys an i3.

LoL...... thats some messed up Logic.

They are GPU Cores.

Consoles don't use CPUs.... they use APUs...... they consist of CPU Cores and GPU Cores (also known as Compute Units).

If we're talking about actual Core Count then you need clarify which part of the APU you are referring too. In the CPU Half.... its only 4 Cores.

Ok, you seem to know what you are talking about. I have an amd r9 380x 4gb gpu, and an fx 6200 cpu. I know my cpu is the bottleneck, and I need to upgrade. I reeeally do not want to upgrade my mobo and cpu, but will if I have to. Im pretty sure the best cpu my mobo can support is an fx 8150. Is that a good upgrade, for around 120 bucks?

But the PS4 has 18 compute units. The PS4 and the XB1 has 8 physical cores 4 physical, 8 logical.,7 on the PS4 are unlocked for the games.

Not going get into this silly argument, but I have researching gaming PC builds and it seems a lot PC master race has not so cutting edge hardware and the budget build videos seem to get way more hits than mid to high end builds. Basically PC gamers fronting like they 4k when most are barely 1080p.

I never said anything like that you guys are still writing down information i never said. The console CPUs are weak never said otherwise, but due to 8 cores the performance is better. Not sure why this is so difficult to understand? People forget the CPUs are clocked at 1.6ghz for the PS4 example and gamers are playing games at 1080p 60 frames high settings.
