So today I was walking around in the shopping mall of my city in of the biggest electronics concerns of whole Europe (Mediamarkt) and Blu-ray was marketed t death. All the bigg 40'' and above HDTV are being used to market HD video together with Blu ray. The only HD-DVD marketing I saw was the 360 addon being displayed with Tokyo drift on a 32'' screen. I seriously think Blu-ray will win.

I haven't seen HD-DVD or Blu-Ray movies in Blockbuster. They're both overpriced. I can buy a DVD player for 50 bucks, the cheapest Blu-Ray OR HD-DVD player is probably over 500. Perhaps even 750.

Blu-Ray is still outselling HD-DVD, most likely because of the large userbase created by sales of the PS3. And if you have a Blu-ray player, do you really want the DVD version of Casino Royale?

Yeah, at the video rental store I work for, I have to put up posters that hang behind the glass in the front of the store and on the walls behinf the counter, and almost ALL of the BIG movies that everyone wants to see are on DVD and Blue-Ray.

I also hear alot ALOT more people asking for Blue-Ray movies than I hear people asking for HD-DVD movies. (we don't carry either yet though)

Here is one thing I like about the HD-DVD's. I have been seeing a lot of them where they have regular DVD on one side and HD-DVD on the other. Very smart IMO. By the DVD's like that now, and watch them in hidh def when you get a HD-DVD. I agree the Blu-ray marketing is flooding the marketplace, which isnt a bad thing for blu-ray

If Fox and Disney both stay exclusive to blu-ray (combined with Sony for the trifecta) then HD-DVD will have a tough time competing. That would be almost like having EA and Ubisoft as exclusive partners in the console world.

As long as there are people willing to pay extra for high definition quality (and there are), there will be a market for both high-def formats.

I don't know why people already have 1080p TVs, most channels don't output at that resolution, and of course BluRay and HD DVD are still expensive.

DVD only really took off when prices dropped into the $300 and less range, plus you didn't need a new TV for DVD

Are you talking about the 360 add-on? You still have to buy the actual 360, so it's at least 500 dollars.

Also Sony had a part in both MiniDisk (which was moderately successful for a time) and CD. Memory Stick is also doing okay by them, Betamax had a much longer life that people seem to believe (till 2001 in Japan), and Sony was the first company to takeover the music world with Walkman. Such a flawed video..

You act like the dvd's were made in the 1940's.

I dunno what pirated copies you're watching but my dvd's look clear and sharp.

The problem with people thinking DVDs are going to win and that they are sharp enough is.... they have yet to actually see blu-ray and DVD being played on an HDTV.  I bought a 60inch 1080p for my PS3.  I hooked up my sister's upscaling dvd player and played a few movies upscaled to 1080i (by the way her upscaling DVD player is one of the highest rated at CNET), then I popped in MI:3 and The Departed on Blu-ray--it litterally blew me out of the water.

If you have a good HDTV of over 50 inches, the difference in sharpness and clairty of the new HD formats makes the jump from VHS to DVD look nominal at best.

And yes, blu-ray has already won the format war.  HD-DVD will be dead by the end of the year.  Check out the news from CES this past January--blu-ray had huge booths set up with hundreds of movies, and HD-DVD had nearly nothing displayed.  Couple that with the marketing muscle behind blu-ray with the anemic marketing of HD-DVD, and the fact that blu-ray has nearly all of the backing of the major movie studios.  This equals a no brainer on why most of the analysts are saying HD-DVD will be dead by this Christmas.

Blu-ray will win it's kind of obvious it has way more support. HD-DVD has been out for 6 more months than blu-ray and Blu-ray still has more movies even though it came out 6 months before HD-DVD

you don't need 360 to use the HDDVD add on all you need is a computer which I'm assuming you have
