That would have also been my answer 4 years ago, but now it's Mass Effect 2.
mass effect 2 is the better game by far. but as for as an RPG goes, KOTOR is my favorite at what the genre sets out to do.3kotor

Amazing story, characters, and combat. I still wish for a 3rd on a regular basis, hell I would even settle for an update of the original.
Yes, MobyGames is still one of the best :P For me, I'll say Final Fantasy IX.Still the best, and considering the lack of "role playing" in some modern RPG´s,it will probably remain as such forever.;)

Wish there was a good console port of the game. Wouldve appreciated it more.
I loved it but hate playing games on my PC.

mass effects a good game, but best RPG? Really? That depends, Mass effect 2 is very light on RPG mechanics, and is essentialy a shooter. Mass Effect 1 is more of an RPG, but lacks the Fun ME2 had. Mix the LVLing system of ME1 (and Combat) with ME2 story line and quests and we'd have a brilliant game. But mine is KOTOR, now only if i could count Bloodbowl as an RPG (Mmmm, my Chaos team of mutant freaks).[QUOTE="Indie_Hitman"][QUOTE="Arach666"]

Hmm I missed out amazon somehow (:P) 14 quids not too bad, I think I'll get this. Won't be able to get Secret of mana now though.I will get sooooooooooooooooooooooo much hate for this, but MY fav RPG of all time is Fable 2. I know its like a simple RPG and what not, I just loved it.

Plus, there are more memorable moments in 2 I find, such as as running up the Skyway to the palace: especially if you've managed to overpower yourself XD. ME are brilliant games, I'm just not sure they deserve 'best RPG'...That would have also been my answer 4 years ago, but now it's Mass Effect 2.

People always talk about the "mechanics", but what about the actual role playing experience?
[QUOTE="Dead-Memories"]i'm pretty sure i saw a few copies at fry's the other day. they have tons of vintage games. Frys? Is that US? Planescape: Torment went out of print YEARS ago. As such, it has been hard to find and corollary coupled with an inflated price. However, I believe it was re-released by some publisher last year, so it should be availible here and there; as well as quite affordable. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/10/27/planescape-torment-re-release/ Check Amazon and ebay.[QUOTE="Indie_Hitman"] Say 'ol chap, where would one purchase one copy of Pkanescape: Torment? none of the main sites sell the game...Indie_Hitman
