Best Artistic Style/Graphics?

I think this all pretty much came from that user who said Killzone looked ugly. I prefer cartoon like games but you have to be blind to not notice that the Nintendo fanboys here usually dont have nice things to say about games like Battlefield, Killzone, Gears, etc.

Also, I'm a huge Nintendo fan (probably the only person in this thread who only owns a Wii) and I can certainly appreciate realistic artstyles.

Shadow of the Collusis (or howeveer it's spelt) oozed atmosphere, but I really can't help but wish it waited till the next gen

Bravo, I'm glad a thread like this exists on SW. I can't stand overly technical, realistic graphics, they just annoy me. My picks would be:

-Okami
-Eternal Sonata
-Final Fantasy XIII
-Super Meat Boy
-Braid
-Chrono Trigger
-Final Fantasy X
-El Shaddai
-Persona 4
-Wind Waker
-Flower
-Paper Mario

Prince of Persia 2008, Super Meat Boy, Bayonetta, Darksiders and Rayman Origins.

I liked Fragile Dreams, Muramasa, Limbo, PB Winterbottom, Paper Mario, and Outland. I'm sure i'm forgetting more.

I think the art style in general for Final Fantasy games is amazing; always new, fresh, intriguing, interesting.

I absolutely love the visuals in:

• Crysis (modded and tweaked)
• Super Mario Galaxy 2
• Age of Empires 3
• Guilty Gear XX Reload
• GTA IV (with a custom ENB config.; vanilla looks like complete crap with a horrendous artistic st yle)
• Planescape Torment (with a HD mod, absolutely stunning)
• Rise of Nations
• Soul Calibur (Dreamcast version)
• Bejeweled 3 (stunning high quality visuals in HD)
• Street Fighter 3rd Strike
• The Temple of Elemental Evil
• Starcraft 2

World of Warcraft, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Okami, League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Borderlands since I'm a sucker for the painting look in games.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind gets a point for the bleak, unique looking and overwhelming art-style used in the game.

It has nothing to do with being cartoon-like or not.

Shadow of the Colossus is not particularly cartoony or necessarily immensely colorful. It's still been frequently mentioned.

No one said you had to agree that games like Wind Waker and Okami have beautiful art styles, but don't expect people to necessarily agree that Gears of War or Killzone have nice art style.

I for one don't find the art direction of either of those games to be of my taste. And that has nothing to do with them trying for more realism - the idea that Gears of War has character designs that are striving for photorealism is rather silly though.

Uncharted, the new Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, also strive for closer realism and have fantastic art design in my opinion.

Does Batman Arkham Asylum count?

Technically people criticise it all day, but I thought it really brought the Gothic side to life. It really blew me away.

Okami still looks awesome 6 years later and I do mean awesome. Zelda WW, Tales, and anything that is cel shaded hold up quite well.

If the dev is trying to make the game look like a cartoon, or painting, it = art, they're just focused on art style.. while realism is just... I wouldn't say a random picture of outdoors, indoors.. is art :)

Inconsistancy

Artdesign is more than just looking like a painting. It's character design (monsters, costumes etc.), environments design, atmosphere, architecture and so on. All of these can be great or not in a realistic game. TW2 imo has a great art design and is not cartoony. Mass Effect is another perfect example.

Team ICO games have fantastic art style, both SoTC and ICO have similar look but you just can't tire of it, candy to the eyes. But the best is yet to come, TLG is probably the most visually impressive game I have seen this gen, and can't want to get my hands on it. First things first though, Team Ico collection come September.

One will still look good thanks to its excellent art style in a decade, the other won't. It's possible to have a good art style and be realistic, just most games don't do it.

Lot of games stand out to me as having a great style, but one of the more overlooked ones to me is the Baten Kaitos series. Seriously some beautiful looking locales in those games and the character designs are very unique. I'm probably one of the only people who would love to see a new installment in that series, but I would totally buy it day 1 :P

Zelda Windwaker. It still looks great today!
