I don't know, wouldn't you need to play every 2D game ever made to come up with a decent answer? All I'm going to say is that I certainly don't think it's SoTN.

Seriously, if you were to poll every editor from every gaming source worlwide, I think SOTN and Super Metroid would share top honors. There haven't been any bad games mentioned, but the idea of some of these being picked over Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is mind boggling.
I know it may sound as if I've never played any older ones, which is very untrue, but I'm going to say Super Meat Boy. I genuinely feel it's a better gaming achievement and more fun to play than anything the 6th or earlier gen had to offer, it's just brilliant.

The best 2D really shouldn't be a game that isn't even the best in its own series.
