This is an odd question, I know.

Im not a hardcore gamer. I have never bought a PS2 (although I have a PS3 with like 4 games) nor have I amassed 120+ games, like some of my friends. I do not spend 5 hours a day playing COD4 or whatever, I can go for a day or two (sometimes a week, although its rare) without putting a game into my PS3. I rent instead of buy.

But whenever I go into an electronic store, Im emberrased to go browse for a PS3 title. I have no idea why. Im especially emberassed if I decide to buy anything, and I have to go up to the dreaded counter and slap that stupid case on the counter, and the cashier must think Im a geek or something.

But im not ashamed to buy a Blu-Ray, or CD, or candy bar. There must be something wrong with me. Am I alone in this?

PalpableCheese's Solution: Go to a Gaming store where they respect you as a fellow gamer. Other Solution: If your going to like WalMart or something, if they say your a geek, put on your geeky glasses and slap them give them the money.

No. Why would I be embarrassed about the fact that I play video games? It's a form of entertainment, and it entertains me.

Hate to go all psychoanalytical on you, but you might be subconsciously labeling yourself as a geek for playing games, which makes you think that it's other people who do.

Exactly, it's normal to have music, t.v. and movies are entertainment and no one finds a problem with that, video games are now doing the same as well.

Walk in with a Kirby shirt and ask for Rock band, then walk out with that huge crate of a game.

Of course. I'm ashamed that I'm doing what is fun to me. It's especially embarassing when I'm in my house playing on my PC, yet no one is watching me. I need help man, please help me get rid of this entertainment!

Nah not at all. It helps that for some odd reason, the entire lacrosse/football crowd at my school (including me) is really into video games(and not just wii sports, stuff like fable 2 and WoW). I think i take it to the next level by going to this message board, but the whole gamer perception is kinda different here.

If I can go to the store for my girl and pick up "products for her", then I certainly have no problem going to grab a copy of a game, or accessory.

Not to mention there's a 99% chance I make more tthan the person ringing me up giving me that condescending look.

Nah, gaming is mainstream. Our generation is full of gamers and everybody and their mom knows who Mario is. Now some of the conversations I have had on SW, I can safely say are slightly too dorky to have in the "real world". So yea, I am more embarrassed about some of the petty arguments I have been involved in on SW over the fact I choose to play something interactive that uses my brain more then watching TV.

Update: I am also embarassed that because I have posted on SW for so long I feel the need to put quotations on, real world LOL.

It sounds to me like you may have some self-esteem issues. You need to loosen up. Video games are a form of entertainment just like anything else. All sorts of people play video games. I'm more of a movie fanatic myself but I still love to play video games with friends.

Lol, never thought of it that way...Everyone has their own way of entertaining themselves, and believe it or not, gaming is the most common way.

Really odd indeed. :)

Agreed. Shame is a sign of attachment to stereotypes. Sounds like TC is afraid of being Identified as a nerd, geek or something like it. People say "stereotypes are there for a reason". Yeah because people perpetuate them. Your a human being, TC. You'll never be more or less. Everything else is just someone's opinion.

Shame often comes from attachment to stereotypes. Your a human being, TC. You'll never be more or less in truth. Every other thing we call ourselves are just opinions, ours or someone elses. What in the eyes and mind of another do you have to live up to?

If Im emberrased? not at all, for me it is no different then buying a movie or a cd, or a book for that matter.

You just buy a peice of entertainment, the stores wont hate you, they exist because people buy thier wares...

Ofcourse im not American, and the "gamers are geeks" never really cought on over here, heck I think half the population under 50 does, or have in thier past, playied games. (My Dad still crushes me at worms and dow)

I guess its the envioment that you grew up in that has given you that discomfort, and it is a deamon you have to fighteverytime you go buy a game I guess.

Over here it is WAY more accepted to proclaim yourself a gamer, then it is to say you are religious, or republican (those are just 2 examples, not that there is anything wrong with either, but theydoes not fit into theenvioment over here)

Heh I even talk about the store clerk about games for 10-15 mins before/while buying a game, to be honest I quite enjoy it ^^

why would I ever feel embarrassed for enjoying a widely accepted form of entertainment? I'm 30 years old and a gamer to the core. If someone feels the need to make fun of me for that then they can go on right ahead with that. I have never cared what people think about me and I most definitely won't care what they think of my hobbies.
