What kind of gamer do you consider yourself to be?

Do you think the console you own caters to your gaming style?

Personally, I'm a casual gamer. I don't play for more than an hour at a time when I'm online, and never more than two hours by myself. I like a good challenge (MM9 is one of my favorite games) but I don't like super lengthy challenges that require endurance (Like raiding in World of Warcraft, if you could call that a challenge.)

I have a PS3, and I love PSN downloads. I also like casual games like MGS4 (Though I know it can be played hardcore) and LittleBigPlanet. I think it does a pretty good job catering to my game st yle What the PS3 lacks, my Wii picks up - though a lot of Wii titles feel like yesteryear's game for me being an old guy.

Btw, Super Hardcore, to me, is the type of person who not only plays through Hell mode on Diablo II, but does it on Hardcore mode.

It matters what you call hardcore, I determine hardcore by what genres/games you play, not the amount of time spent.

Definitely not casual and nor am I hardcore, somewhere in between for sure :D I have a very distinct taste in games and don't always go for the most popular option, also I hate FPS. This gen I have a PS3 only and plan on buying a Wii sometime next year. Currently the PS3 fully caters to my taste in games and has majority of my favourite franchises, plus I love Team Ico.

me and the TS are pretty similar, i usually only play for an hour or 2 at a time (or until i reach a part that kills me repeatedly) and i've actually been trying to make time in my schedule for gaming because i really do enjoy it, my only complaint is that i don't always have much time and if i play for 20 minutes you can't usually even reach a save point in that time, so i kinda have to set aside an hour or 2 to play

Roguelike is obviously more 'hardcore' then action.

"Core." I used to be insanely hardcore, playing games 15 hours a day or so. Now life is just too tangled up with work and all. I feel too stressed at the end of the day to must the energy required for some games. I play a game every once in awhile, at least when I have free time or am not feeling totally drained.

No idea what I should be classified as, although I play pretty much every genre and own a PS3, 360, Wii, and PC. I don't play sports games, so I guess I could be considered hardcore.

I would say I was a casual hardcore gamer, I own a PC. Wii, 360 and DS. In order of what systems get the most play time its PC>Wii>DS>360. I enjoy gaming on all my systems but my least played is the 360.

TC you need to clarify the definition of what is hardcore.

From SW sticky:

Hardcore **

Generally considered to be a longtime, dedicated gamer with a deep love for the medium. Hardcore gamers have typically played a large number of games, follow industry news, and have a genuine interest both in playing videogames and the hobby as a whole. The hardcore demographic also includes those gamers who become dedicated to the development of games.

**The exact definition of a "hardcore gamer" is a subject that is sometimes debated within System Wars - this definition encompasses a general explanation for the term's use in most discussions, however the exact games, systems, and habits of a "hardcore gamer" are a matter of personal opinion.

Even though I own all consoles I still consider myself inbetween just cause I don't feel like I need to play every single game released. Give me some solide single player games and one addictive mulitplayer and I'm usually good to go.

In SW terms, a casual. I don't devote overtly much time to video gaming, don't terribly like gray-brown movie wannabe shooters - I prefer colorful arcade titles instead, prefer local multiplayer over online, own a Wii, and wish the industry would die already.

What definitions for casual and hardcore are you using? I've been gaming since I was about 5 years old and have basically owned a console every generation since. On top of that I've been gaming on a PC for almost the same amount of time and currently own almost every single worthwhile console (NES, SNES, N64, GC/Wii, PS, PS2, 360, GEN, SAT [selling], DC; Xbox (buying) PS3 (buying)).

The types of games I play vary, but I play what I like. I don't like everything and don't force myself to play things I don't like just to label myself something I'm not.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't play games everyday, not more than an hour or two a day sometimes if it's really addicting I'll go three hours like with an engrossing RPG or an online shooter that's absolutely insanse but those times are few and far between. Most of the time, I just play and then get the urge to do something else. It's a hobby for me. I'd much rather go out than stay in, and sure going out involves money sometimes which means I have to work, but I do like playing games too (which also involves money :P). But I'd rather have a good time with friends, family and/or strangers (depending on the situation) than play games. But when I do play games I have a blast, it's enjoyable and takes up some time.

I own a 360 and Wii. These days I don't buy games at a legit price, I wait to find deals on them so I can get more. They aren't always the newest releases, but that's OK. ODST and BlazBlue were the only two I paid $60 for. I got a good deal on Punch-Out!!, Klonoa, House of the Dead Overkill, Prince of Persia and Mass Effect this year. I'll probably hunt down Tales of Vesperia if I can or go for Fallout 3 GotY Edition or Dead Space (depending on the mood I'm in).

I also play PC and PS3 games, but I don't have them in my house. Gaming PC is at my uncle's and PS3 is at my cousin's place. Either way, we have fun playing things together, but as usual, it's a hobby not a lifestyle. I don't think I'm casual though, so I guess I'll pick "core."

Another thing TC. I'm under the impression that you think that core is something between casual and hardcore. When in fact core is the Nintendos equivalent of hardcore, just with the added bonus that it also means that you are an oldshcool follower of their franchises.

I own PS3, DS, 360, PSP...and a killer PC...

I see hardcore gaming as a good chunk of your life spent doing it...I spend about 10 hours or so a day on video games, so I'd say Hardcore (I guess SUPER HARDCORE, but I'd feel like I was 12 and trying too hard if I said that).

Most people that I consier 'Hardcore' gamers are PC gamers that are heavily into the modding communities, and keep up to date on gaming news, etc. Up to date being checking headlines at least once a day.

First time I've heard of anything like that. One of the best definitions of "core" (outside of a market analysis context, in that context we're pretty much all Core) would pretty much be: core = hardcore - rabid fanaticism and conservatism. Conservatism here not being political, but just wanting to retain the staus quo, the valueset that has reigned for the last twenty years.

To me the definition lies in time spent, what genres and how many games you play as well as how much interest you put into it. If you fail to meet many of these then you are either core or just casual. Not that there's anything wrong with that but there are many ppl calling themselves hardcore and calling others out on it when they really aren't.

Hmmm, i'd say probaly casual?

I like various kinds of games (Sports being my favorite) but only play now and then.

I own a PS3, Wii , Xbox 360 and a PSP.

Edit: Damn i'm out of my depth here. One guy said he ONLY plays 5 hours a day. 5 hours is a damn long time to be playing games ...

We're all gamers, there is nothing wrong with dividing up a huge group of people into smaller sub sets. I don't get why people don't like being called hardcore, casual or whatever. You are what you are, its not a bad thing.

if you'd have to label me i guess hardcore

on a side note i think its ironic that many people out there label world of warcraft as casual. it may not be the most complex PC game out there, but its definately more complex then any console game i can think of, which imo adds to being "hardcore"

plus WoW does have a reputation of being played for lengthy times in one sitting, definatly not casual
