My friends, for the sake of comparison. In the old days we had VHS, the quality was very poor. Then came along DVD with Russel Crow in Gladiator. The difference in quality of both visuals and audio was astounding. VHS went the way of the dinosaur and DVD is now the standard.

Now, we of course have Blueray. Unlike VHS though, the visual is barely noticeable. Many people still just stick with DVD's and generally don't give a shit about Blueray.

Are the Playstation 4 and Xbox One very much like this? We had a huge VHS jump to DVD in visual quility. But now, it's blueray and most people don't give a shit?

Timewarp back to 2006.

There is an outstanding difference between Blu-Ray and DVD if you have the right equipment.

Happy gaming.

Most DVD's only have 400-500 kbps bitrates.

Bluray movies have over 6mbps bitrates. That's 12 times more audio resolution

You'll see a change in visual quality if you have a good and big HDTV. Blu-ray doesn't mean much if you have a crap HDTV.

For games it a storage issue. 50GB v 8GB odd.

I'm only on a 40 inch 1080P TV but the difference between a DVD is a blueray is night and day.

The fact you keep calling it 'blueray' let's me know already that you don't know enough about the format to have an opinion on the quality difference.

There's a big difference in picture quality between DVD and Blu-ray. I've been thinking for a long time that it's surprising that DVDs are still more popular. I mean, most people have HDTVs now and Blu-ray discs or players aren't very expensive. I can rent the movies for $2. But I guess many people sit too far back from their TVs to appreciate the difference.

mines is good, mind you for its time it was a fairly top end samsung 4 years back and it runs good, there is a noticeable difference mind you im the person who will almost always take vinyl over digital formats any day when it comes to music and audio just due to the quality, and i have the ability to play 3 instruments :P (Bass,Guitar and Drums) so im fairly audio and music centric.

At the same time audio tends to be mixed for such situations that its a best size that fits all systems, although in recent years albums and most likely even films have been heavily designed for mp3 devices and more aiming for "loudness" and is much less organic in a few ways.

blu-ray movies cost too much so I just buy the stream version and it's just as good. Quality is definitely better because it holds more data.

It isn't that expensive though the only Blu-ray discs I have are television series and they were both relatively cheap for TV series. One of which was $47 and it included the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital Download copy.

More people use DVD's. And don't really care. Or just stream movies, which can be even lower quality than DVD's

This seem to be the case with next generation consoles as well, with tablets, phones and other devices, other forms of media producing devices exist making consoles even at launch seem somewhat stagnant and dated with the times. .

Who can't tell the difference between a Blueray and a DVD?... Seriously. My half blind uncle was even impressed when I setup her home theatre and threw in a Blu-ray of King Kong.

Really? Netflix steams at 1080P if you have the bandwidth and destroys the 480P of a DVD.

I get the feeling you don't have a good internet connection or a good 1080 TV. Possibly both.

So you're saying, that consoles are Blu-rays, rather than consoles... They are a disc-format, rather than a console?

If this is a nod to my capitalization on "ray..." then touché.

If you don't notice the difference between DVD and Blu Ray, you're playing the disc on the wrong TV.

Here's a hint; it needs to be a 1080p TV (hell even 720p is noticeable over 480)

Oh I didn't know you where knocking him for that, I thought it was confusion over how Blu-ray's are spelt.

My bad... They are consoles. They use a disk format. The format is called Blu-ray. It's a noticeable jump from DVD.

For movies it doesn't matter enough for me. I watch DVDs more because the difference doesn't mean enough to warrant the price for me. Gaming wise its storage so hopefully we'll see it utilized.

You people are falling for the bait, either that or this guy is just too poor to get a proper hdtv. The difference is easily noticeable, everyone I know has a blu ray player.

Most DVD's only have 400-500 kbps bitrates.

Bluray movies have over 6mbps bitrates. That's 12 times more audio resolution

A lot of people forget about the audio side of things when it comes to Bluray

The audio quality on most televisions is pretty poor. It's irrelevant.

Most people interest enough to own a HDTV and Blu-Ray player don't listen to the audio through the TV.

More people use DVD's. And don't really care. Or just stream movies, which can be even lower quality than DVD's

This seem to be the case with next generation consoles as well, with tablets, phones and other devices, other forms of media producing devices exist making consoles even at launch seem somewhat stagnant and dated with the times. .

DVD is irrelevant. I was talking about Blu-Ray. That hard for you to stay on topic?

My nostalgia goggles say DVD on a decent tube tv back then was pretty good.. I entered FHD BR content on an ok lcd (SIPS) and plasma and my mind wasn't really blown..

If I felt impressed it's only because it's on a large screen and don't look like crap like typical dvd content would on larger FHD display.

nostalgia goggles for me are super effective.
