Right now in Europe/Asia the PS3 apparently outsells the 360 by about 20-30k per week. In japan the gap is 10k per week. In NA sales are roughly even.

With a $299 Pro, and im guessing a $199-$229 Arcade and $399 Elite (same price as 40gigPS3), the value is just too much to ignore.

Working class families will opt for the cheap Arcade, not caring for the missing bells and whistles. The hardcore gamers will buy an Elite over a 40 gig PS3. Think about it, its 3x harddrive space, component cables, HDMI cable, Headset, and ethernet cable thrown in. ANd the regualr gamers will see a $100 gap between the Pro and 40gig PS3. Many consumers are uninformed so many will disregard the bluray and wifi. ALl they will see is a $100 gap, which one will they choose? WHich one will the parents choose, a $299 360 or a $399 PS3?

Point: This will obviously give 360 sales a boost, which will also help counteract 360 lagging sales in japan/europe. This will make worldwide PS3 sales not gain any meaningful ground on 360's worldwide installed base. And its fairly certain that PS3 wont drop its price, as SOny clearly wants to make a profit, they are loosing enough money as it is on PS3.

I always think of price cuts as more of a sign of weakness than of strength.

I already own a PS3 so what do I care?

The way I see it, the PS3 has a strong year coming up and an even better 2009. I suspect Sony is going to reignite people's interest at E3 by showing a ton of upcoming exclusive games that people have been waiting for.

I also think a $50 price drop for the PS3 isn't totally out of the question, and even if it was, the PS3 outsold the 360 in 2007 despite costing way more and having even fewer games.

1st - you can forget about Japan thats common sense. 2nd - Europe the price drop should help a little but still sales will be for the PS3 by a small margin. 3rd - N/A the price drop will help it as far as casuals go but for the tech savvy hardcore people the decision will be up to them do they want a blu-ray player/games w/ 80gb hdd mind you its upgradable (and easy) or a balls out game console which with the price drop that xbox live membership is basically free. I still got my money on the PS3 outselling the 360 for the remainder of 08.

Fact that the PS3 sells well all this time and even beating the 360 sales here and there in the past and present with the line up of games it had at the time, shows cow have nothing to worry about.

no, the PS3 SHIPPED more. Remember MS flooded the market with 10 million 360's at the end of 2006 to meet their quota? So offcourse Sony SHIPPED more ps3's in 07 then MS did. But that doesnt mean it sold more.

They really can't afford to lower it anymore with the amount of money they are losing on each PS3 sold as it is right now. Factor in the other losses from the PS3 and really it would be tough.

A price cut by Microsoft will force Sony to make a price cut. Sony isn't losing as much money on the new skus. Consumers win.

Actually it SOLD more than the Xbox 360, 1.5 million units more to be exact.

Spin it all you want if it helps you sleep at night. The fact is, I go by official numbers released to shareholders by the companies. Trying to stick your head in the sand and act like those numbers are wrong is just willfull ignorance on your part.

The fact of the matter is that the 360 launched a year earlier and roughly $100 (to $200) cheaper. It is ALWAYS going to be cheaper than the PS3. ALWAYS. It was cheaper at launch, it was cheaper head-to-head, and it will be the first to have price drops every time. So why should I care this time?

Well if they found a way to reduce production cost they in the end are looking for a viable means for a price cut. It will be interesting to see since the Core/Arcade will most likely go to $250 that all the BS about Wii selling due to price will be put to rest.

The 65nm RSX is supposed to begin shipping this fall. Hopefully it brings down the PS3's price some.

But, I think the 360 price cut is awesome. As soon as Jasper comes out I'll probably buy one along with Tales of Vesperia to go along with the 360 rpg's I bought to play on my friends 360. Lower prices help everyone.

May 15th 2008 Sony losing $260 on each PS3 sold. Now they couldn't have reduced production costs by $260 for each PS3 made in two monthes people.

Now Sony themselves indicate that they lose $130 per PS3 but the source begs to differ. Whether who is right doesn't really matter as the PS3 is still losing money for each unit sold.

If you disagree please provide links to your points please. Sometimes things can get a little mixed up but that's not too often.

Microsoft seems to be the one afraid of Sony. The 360 is 3rd every month in every region, Microsoft is trying to do whatever they can to get themselves back into the competition

I'll buy a arcade system for $199, thats all its worth anyway.

if the price drops low enough... i might buy a 360.. that way when it gives me the RROD (which it will sooner or later), I won't be as bothered.

Goes back to playing MGS4

price cuts hardly ever help, the 360 will see a boost in sales for a week or two, then it will probably return to its regular salesst1ka

Yes, that is normally the case. But to be totally fair to the 360, this price cut will finally move them into what is known as the "sweet spot" for consoles. $299 is seen by most as a good price for a console, and that is why they typically launched at that price.

So it is possible that moving the 360 to the $299 point could essentially be seen as a relaunch by the public. The problem is that the 360 still relies on NA for 60 per cent of its world wide sales, and struggles in other regions. While some could argue Sony is doing terrible this gen, it is at least selling consistently and steadily in all regions which is how it is beating the 360 in terms of world wide sales each year.

A few months ago new came out that PS3s now cost roughly $399 to make.So they stopped "losing money on each PS3 sold" a few months ago.And as they get their act together and release more games, their income will improve regardless of the hit they take on the consoles.

Lemmings always seem to ignore this.

And what would they be ignoring?

The 40 GB system is selling at cost. Can't say for sure about the 80 GB. Either way a price cut would result in Sony losing money on each console. The only console that sells for a profit is the Wii.

It was actually price of materials that got reduced to $400. It didn't include shipping, packaging, assembly, and all those other expenses.

Do you have a link for this?

That article is only two monthes old and it says that Sony is losing $260 per console even though Sony claims they are losing $130 per console. You are well aware that even if they were losing $130 per console that the the price gap between 40GB and 80GB is $100 so that would still be a loss of $30 correct?

These are just the links I'm seeing I haven't been able to find anything else. If you have anything please share as more info is always welcome.

I was expecting a price cut from Sony at E3 anyways. My only concern is if Sony believes they can continue to outsell the X360 at the same rate without one. I don't believe that is possible, PS3 needs a price cut to say at the same sales pace above X360. Imagine a $299 PS3 pricepoint........now you are starting to get really close to where they need to be (which is ultimately around $149-$199.

Sony was doing the same thing when their console was $600 and was getting outsold by the GBA in the States while doing miserable in Japan as well. Sony have cut their console in price by $200. The fastest price cut for any major competitor in history.

Maybe my memory is wrong but the Xbox holds the record for the quickest price cut.

Im' actually confused by your statment though.....do you mean the biggest (by dollar amount) and fastest? Or are you talking about biggest (by a percent) and fastest?

Here in good old Europe the X-box 360 cost less than a Wii. Draw your own conclusion from that.

I never will be able to understand why people care about such innate things like which console sells more. Seriously, why care? So you what, get to come on to gamespot and brag about it? Or do some of you actually tell people in your life such ridiculous things like which console is selling more? Because I really hope such a trivial thing like console sales doesn't actually bring any real happiness to your life, because if it does then you need some help.

I don't see a price cut for $50 dollars doing that much damage actually. Thank you for ummm taking care of tax MS, since I heard the Pro or Preimuim (whatever sku) is going down to just $299. If they really wanted to make an impact they would slash it by $100. A $250 Premuim 360 would have me sold at first sight. Im still debating on the $299 one.

I also expect Sony to come out with a $50 dollar price cut down the line also. I don't think either price cut will do big things for sales personally. Since Sony is losing money I can see why the 80 gig was discontuined. I don't know if it was contuined due to the MGS4 bundle, but I haven't seen the 80 gigs sold alone in stores or marketed. I wonder if they are just gonna go with the 40 gig or 80 gig alone, or maybe a new 120 gig that was rumored way back when.

Console sales drive software development, and vice versa. The top system gets priority in multiplat development, and preferential treatment in exclusives. The PS2 was a golden cow (that a pun?) last round, and MS and Sony are fighting for that. The Wii is its own thing.

I hope they are. Seems like the cows are on a month-long hot streak. Here is hoping the price cut will help 360 top PS3 in sales.

I always think of price cuts as more of a sign of weakness than of strength.supercubedude64
Didn't the PS2 cut it's price repeatedly? Was it weak at any point in it's life?
