Anyone else feel like the handheld market is utterly pointless, and a waste?

Just saw that a new Final Fantasy was released, but of course it's not for a real platform, but a handheld. Why do these things even exist? Why the hell would I want to play a game, on a tiny screen, that will amount to nothing more than 2d or faux 3d graphics, when I can play real games on my TV or PC?

I just think that developers like Square Enix should put more time into things like, oh a FF7 remake, instead of worrying about making a crappy handheld RPG.

With more handhelds sold then any of the "next" (current!) gen consoles, I'd say there is a very large market despite your obvious hate.

Tens of millions of systems sold and you think it's pointless? There are some truly amazing handheld games out there, for DS, PSP etc.

The simple fact that the PSP and DS have outsold any home console this gen destroys the theory of it being pointless. The fact that some of the best games this gen are on handhelds destroy the point of it being a waste.

I'd like to forward a guess here. I think handhelds are for those times when lugging around your PC or TV is relatively impractical. I mean, I like 40 inch LED TVs with home theaters and all, but I'm fairly sure they're not going to let me install that into a 747 before the flight.

Eh, you're complaining that jrpg developers have abandoned consoles in favor of handhelds, which cost considerably less to develop on?

Without handhelds, there wouldn't BE that many jrpgs to speak of. It makes you look even worse when you say 'a waste' because handheld rpgs so far have been largely amazing and nostalgic

I wouldn't say a waste, as it creates mad money, especially for Nintendo. You can go your whole life knowing you'll never create anything as successful.

As for the games,I find them really hard to invest time in. I know a game like Phantom Hourglass is good, but it's hard for me to invest a long period of time on a short screen holding a stylus. I like short term games like Elite Beat Agents...and I want a sequel for that naooo!

Nah I don't feel that way, I love my handhelds. The "tiny" screen is tiny in relation to a TV, but your eyes are about 3 metres away from the TV, while a your eyes are about 30cm away from the handheld. So it's not really that bad. Well that seems to take away the crux of your argument. Furthermore, hand helds don't take over the lounge TV, you can be a little more "social" with handhelds in a way I guess, in the way where you can whip it out any time and everyone else can still have their TV. Then finally the obvious pro is the mobility and ability to play a game anywhere and not just home.

And finally, I'm not concerned about how much power a system has, just as long as it's innovative and allows developers the ability to make interesting and fun games. So the handhelds are on equal grounds as the home consoles, and thus a handheld is just like another home console in the market with its own unique library of great games. In my humble opinion anyway.

umm, because there are people who actually go outside, and a handheld is perfect for killing time when your traveling through town, or being stuck in a car on a long road trip. I mean we cant carry a ps3, or 360, and tv everywhere we go just to get our fix on games.

No. When the handheld market plays host to systems like the DS, which is arguably one of the best gaming systems ever created, I'd say it's in fact more relevant than the console market.

Sony and Nintendo probably don't feel that. Nintendo has sold nearly 100,000,000 DS handhelds and the PSP is over 50,000,000... massive numbers.

While I understand your distaste for the handheld market, there are millions of players who enjoy the games. So you'll have to accept that developers are going to release games for both.

It's not like the handheld market is slowing the console/PC market down. It's just that it takes a lot longer to develop games forthem, so it feels like handhelds see more game releases simply because they can put the games out faster with smaller teams.

I wouldn't say it's pointless, but I think we can all agree that you're missing out if you only have a handheld console to play games on. Many handheld games are just watered down versions of 'the real thing'. Games like GTA: Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories on PSP can be fun, but they're nothing special compared to GTA III and Vice City respectively. The same goes for Metroid Prime Hunters on DS when compared to the Metroid Prime console games.

Of course there's the benefit of being able to play games on the road. And because handheld games are usually spinoff versions of the main series, devs will experiment faster, which sometimes results in gameplay elements making it to the main series (New Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario Galaxy 2 for example). But sometimes, handheld games are just incredibly fun, even when compared to their console counterparts. Mario Kart DS is often considered one of the best, if not the best Mario Kart game.

for me it is useless because if i'm not at home i am doing something and don't have time to be goofing about.

i can see it being something you would want to do though if you are on a long car trip and are not the one driving or are a student and waiting for a class to begin or whatever.

i doubt i will ever outgrow home consoles and pc but as far as having the time to play a handheld all i can tell you is enjoy it while you still can.

I agree that I personally do not see the draw to play on a handheld, but obviously we are not the majority. The numbers they have sold is staggering. But here are 3 quick reasons why. 1). People travel and like to game. Handhelds allow this to happen. 2). Price. Believe it or not there are a lot of people out there who cannot afford the "real" systems and home theater systems. 3). (NOT JUST but a huge factor). KIDS. Parents love to keep their kids occupied and happy. What better way then handheld gaming. Lost track of how many times I have been in public and seen 2+ kids with parents that are glued to their DS's while the parents do their thing. Great way to keep the kids calm and again goes back to point number 2. Parents don't want to pay $60 a game when they can pay $20-30. Speaking to point 3, it is scary how everyday we as a society come closer and closer to the society depicted in Wall-E. Obsessed with our cell phones, iPods, and handheld gaming devices.

do you ever leave your house, TC?

some people like to game when they are away. or maybe their TV/computer is already being used. there are many reasons to have handhelds

plus, it's also good for devs. it's cheaper to make a great game on a handheld than on a console

Hhhhhmmm.. no, you're wrong. The market for handheld systems is even greater then consoles in some regions. On the go gaming is fun and exciting. The game screens have actually gotten bigger over the years. The original Gameboy screen wasn't that big as the new DS game screens. The only problem with handheld gaming is there aren't enough quality titles being released. The DS gets a lot of crappy titles, but then there are a few gems that come out. I use my handhelds mostly for RPGS, puzzles, platform, racing and classic games. Sports games and FPS belong on HD consoles for me.

There's a reason some of us play games, it's called "fun." It's what happens when you "enjoy" "playing" a game rather than looking at it. I have frequently experienced this sensation of "fun" while gaming on a handheld.

The games on handheld are often more fun than the console games. But that is just taste.

Genres that die out on consoles/pc because they aren't big enough can thrive on handhelds. Like high quality puzzle games (Professor Layton). Or 2D games in general.

Another neat thing about handhelds is that You can travel with them or play them outdoors.

And that i can play them without wearing contacts or glasses.

With more handhelds sold then any of the "next" (current!) gen consoles, I'd say there is a very large market despite your obvious hate.

There are more handhelds sold than consoles meaning that there are more customers that developers can reach while at the same time not having to invest horrendous amounts of money for a single game.
