It had a rough start, but it's already been recovering, and now, it seems like the 3DS is set to have a stellar 2012 lineup. The titles below are all excellent games that you can enjoy only on the 3DS next year, with two exceptions.

LUIGI'S MANSION 2

LM2

ANIMAL CROSSING

AC3DS

HEROES OF RUIN

Heroes of Ruin

KID ICARUS: UPRISING

Kid Icarus

BEYOND THE LABYRINTH

RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS

Resident Evil

PAPER MARIO

Paper Mario

TIME TRAVELERS

Time Travelers

TALES OF THE ABYSS 3D

MARIO TENNIS

METAL GEAR SOLID 3D: SNAKE EATER

MGS3D

MONSTER HUNTER TRI G

MH3G

THEATRHYTHM: FINAL FANTASY

FF

KINGDOM HEARTS 3D: DREAM DROP DISTANCE

GUILD 01

Guild 01

LEGO CITY STORIES

Lego City Stories

CRUSH 3D

ROLLER COASTER TYCOON 3D

The coming year seems loaded, and this isn't even including some more 'questionable' games like Mario and Sonic at the Olympics...

So which games will you buy?

Not to be controversial but I can see why handhelds are dying out.

I can't see any of these games doing well, save a few exceptions.

I said this in that other thread about the PS3's 2012 lineup, but the 3DS seems to have the best 2012 lineup so far. This list just confirms it. I am finally starting to feel satisfied about my (impulse) purchase.

Really? Games like Professor Layton, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Resident Evil and Monster Hunter all come from series that are HUGE (as in, sell more than 5 million huge). You really don't think any of those titles will do well?

Yeah, it looks fine. Forgot about Beyond the Labyrinth. I have some degree of interest in 8 of them. Now it's just a matter of seeing which ones are total garbage and/or never get localized. :]

I'm not sure where you're from and I assume the 3DS is doing well there but I'm generally speaking about where I'm from.

Mention Professor Layton or Monster Hunter to someone here and they'll look at you like you've got two heads.

I don't think there's a high 3DS adoption level around these parts, I rarely hear about them or see any around. MGS and Resident Evil might do well but as for the more obscure titles....

I'm in the US right now, and Layton is highly popular (even more so in Europe, I hear). Monster Hunter is a slightly more niche title, but it still does very well.

The game looks great! The trailer on the eShop has the best use of 3D on the system yet IMO. The graphics kick LM1 to the curb.

I'm very excited about Kid Icarus and Paper Mario. I wonder which announced or unannounced game will be Nintendo's big holiday title for next year, they might take it easy in Q4 to highlight Wii U and let 3D Land+Mario Kart do its thing cus I can't foresee any big hitter.

I think Nintendo will exhaust its first party lineup by June, and let the third parties take over the second half (most of the titles on that list are third party). This leaves them free to concentrate on the Wii U, and the 3DS continues getting sustained quality support.

You best add Lego City Stories! Don't you doubt the awesomeness of the Lego games! Plus it comes out for the Wii-U and supposedly has cross-platform play.

It's from that one guy who left Capcom and directed MML3 I think.

You should add Crush 3D, it looks good and the first game was highly praised. I assume you didn't put Layton vs. Wright on the list because it's not confirmed for 2012 outside of Japan.

I mentioned Tri G, because that is confirmed for Fall 2012 in the west, but I did not mention Monster Hunter 4 because we don't even know its Japanese release date yet.

You know, I've come to a conclusion about Nintendo's reaction to the 3DS. Initially I suggested that Nintendo was having the same unjustified freak out that SW was having because it wasn't an instant success. I've come to the conclusion that it was rather that the price of the Vita completely caught them off guard and they did not expect Sony to sell it for under $400.

Anyways, good lineup.

That is most likely actually true. The tepid sales of the 3DS might have further spurred them into immediate action. If I may ask, how did you come to that conclusion?

Level-5 ran a poll asking people which games they should localize, and Layton vs. Wright had the most votes by far. I think it's all but guaranteed.

It could easily slip into 2013, though, because of Mask of Miracle. Level-5 takes their time with the Layton.

I sure hope so, I want that game here so bad. Regardless, what with Level 5's patchy track record, and Capcom's recent spate of baffling decisions, I'm adopting an 'I'll believe it when I see it stance,' just so that I am not burned.

These games where all in development before Vita was even announced. I think it's more like they where hoping that Nintendogs+cats, 3D novelty and the built in stuff like faceraiders+3Dcamera would keep a high demand at a high price.

But they did not, so ultimately they pushed back these minor titles such as Kid Icarus which was supposed to be there day one, because they'd send them to die with a small userbase, they expected more sales.

What Vita may have caused is that Nintendo decides to not push back any of these titles, under normal circumstances they would, in order to make a strong impression.

First, I agree with you on the "tepid sales of the 3DS."

To answer you, I think in SW we get confused by a variety of sources. First, the initial library of the 3DS. Realistically, Nintendo would have been fully aware of their future lineup. I would imagine 3rd parties give Nintendo notice when they plan on developing titles for their systems. If anyone knows how to sell hardware without software, it's Nintendo. Even if the sales were "tepid," they were not terrible and the handheld is doing well in comparison with the DS in the same time frame (read: better).

And yet, the price drop still feels hasty and drastic. It's not justified by the performance of the 3DS. If anything, I think it was unacceptable to Nintendo to have the 3DS selling at the same price point as the Vita.

What strikes me is all of these companies probably have spies. They should be more or less famliar with what the other companies are doing. I wonder if Sony fed them false information.

I don't think it has to do with the library lineup so much as the two systems both selling for $300. I don't think Nintendo saw the Vita selling for $300 when they decided to price the 3DS. Of course, they also thought they could maintain demand at $300 when they initially priced it.

Not so much that as much as wanting to maintain a price advantage against Sony products. I think Nintendo fully expects to beat Sony in every price war. Given the differences in hardware and strategy, this is understandable.

I don't think it has to do with the library lineup so much as the two systems both selling for $300. I don't think Nintendo saw the Vita selling for $300 when they decided to price the 3DS. Of course, they also thought they could maintain demand at $300 when they initially priced it.

? There was one point where the 3DS was the same price as the Vita was proposed to be. I'm pretty sure the Vita was always $300. Unless I'm wrong. But I specifically remember them having the same price ...

If anything, I think it was unacceptable to Nintendo to have the 3DS selling at the same price point as the Vita.

hakanakumono

So they were panicking that the 3DS might not be able to hold its own against the Vita when they were both on an even footing as far as price was concerned?

Yeah, given that Nintendo always tries to position itself as a family friendly product, it might have figured that the Vita (a perceived 'premium' product) selling at the same price as its 3DS wouldn't do it any favors, and so it might have decided to slash the 3DS price to a safer range that the Vita could not possibly match in the foreseeable future.

No, the Vita has two models- a lower priced Wi-fi model that's $250, and an upper price 3G model that's $300. It was the lower priced Vita that matched the 3DS's $250 price.

What strikes me is all of these companies probably have spies. They should be more or less famliar with what the other companies are doing. I wonder if Sony fed them false information.

Anyways, good lineup.

hakanakumono

These games where all in development before Vita was even announced. I think it's more like they where hoping that Nintendogs+cats, 3D novelty and the built in stuff like faceraiders+3Dcamera would keep a high demand at a high price.

But they did not, so ultimately they pushed back these minor titles such as Kid Icarus which was supposed to be there day one, because they'd send them to die with a small userbase, they expected more sales.

What Vita may have caused is that Nintendo decides to not push back any of these titles, under normal circumstances they would, in order to make a strong impression.

What matters are 3DS' own hardware sales. If 3DS was selling like Wii, they wouldn't have cut the price even if Vita cost 150.

Pretty much. Funny thing about prices is that sometimes selling something at a higher prices fuels the idea that it's 'premium,' regardless of whether it is or not. Although, we can probaby agree that the Vita is more capable hardware. :P

Yes, pricing certainly helps with a premium image, although brand perception is an equally big factor (ask Hyundai, who have problems selling the Genesis at a premium price). Nintendo is not perceived as a premium brand, whereas Sony is. And yes, the Vita is certainly a better piece of kit, you'd have to be a fool to deny that :P

hmm, maybe not at least in the short term, it would be more wise to rake in the profits even though they risk Vita building a market they could've stopped!

Anyway 3DS' software sales are horrible. That's the real issue. All those millions upon millions of shovelware titles sold on Wii and DS won't happen ever again, those consumers will go to Apple/facebook.

I suspect 3DS and Wii U will have great hardware numbers, but will end up with significantly lesser software attachment rates. People will buy these systems for a select 5 must have games, not to build libraries.

That's the issue Nintendo is facing I'd say.
