2011 is turning out to be The Year of the Flop

AAA potential titles which became AA

1) Dead Space - 8.5
2) Marvel vs Capcom 3 - 8.5
3) Killzone 3 - 8.5
4) Dragon Age 2 - 8.0
5) Crysis 2 - 8.5

That's 5 heavy weights which failed to live up to their reputation. I predict Batman: AC, Dungeon Siege 3, Gears of War 3 and Witcher 2 to be AA as well.

All we have left is Dark Souls, Skyrim, Uncharted 3 & Diablo 3 (hopefully) to save the year. Dark Souls may suffer the same fate as Dead Space. The kind of game which is good only during the first taste.

Shogun 2 did its part, i'll give it that. But at the end of the year, more games would have flopped than delivered.

Wasn't LBP 2 also from this year or was it late last year? That one delivered also.

all these games would have scored a 9 few years back, it wont now. so i think we need to reduce our expectations as well. we cant get more out of consoles now so the quality level will be the same.

Hardware is old. As the timeline goes on it becomes increasingly difficult to "WOW" people. So i think it makes sense.

I can't wait for them to review Failda Skyrim Sword. Considering how far RPGs have gone in the last few years;

7.5 if it comes out before Oblivion

7.0 if it comes out after Oblivion

I can't wait for it to get a crappy score, so Nintendo get there fingers out their arse and start using theyre vast developers talent to make some modern games.

Shogun 2 delivered well. I got way more than I expected.

this flop mentality it driving me nuts....8.5 is a damn good score and it's insulting to the devs when a game gets trashed for getting a great score because it didn't meet some fanboys hype...ridiculous

lets forget that these scores are not universal and that they have been chosen from select sources. lets forget that reviewers themselves are not fool-proof or bias-proof by any means. The mere idea of hiding behind other people's reviews is just shameful. why cant you just have your own opinions on these games? TC, let me show you something. this is called, "having a stance." here are my scores for these games

They are only flops because SW has turned into a 9 or nothing forum. The hype threads are full of 9 votes because of fanboys both for and agains the game. Infinite_Access

It's just a game though, started in this section of the GS forums. 8.5 is certainly a great score, only children that don't know anything could even state that 8.0 is average. I mean damn, it's factual knowledge that 5.0, in a 1 - 10 scale, is average.

Just joke around, make fun of fanboys, or ignore all of it alltogether. It's not like it'll influence your enjoyment with any game, i don't get this. Why do people always care what reputation a game has, because the only thing that matters is your enjoyment.

i really hope that SW stops the whole hype/flop ratings we have going on because they make no sense and are really dumb. all of those games scored 8-8.5. those are great scores and great games. are you not going to play those games cause they didnt meet the "hype"? if so, youre missing out on some great games

On topic, it definitely has been the year of the flop. I was actually going to post a similar thread, but you beat me to it. And the majority of them can be attributed to developers selling out and dumbing down their games.

Here is how i would rate the games i played this year

1) Dead Space - 9 (just as good as Dead Space if not better)
2) Marvel vs Capcom 3 - 7.5 (loved MvC2 and really like this game but get bored with it to quickly)
3) Total War gogun2 - 9.5 (best game of the year buy far for me everything i wanted in a RTS well done CA)
4) Dragon Age 2 - 8.0 (was good but no where near as good as the first)
5) Crysis 2 - 8.5 (getting it as i loved the first and 8.5 is a good score)

If i took reviews as fact i would miss out on a ton of amazing games the only opinion that realy matters is your own, just use reviews as a guide line.

In all honesty, I never thought any of those were guaranteed AAAs. Of your predictions, I think Gears of War 3 is going to score AAAs because the series has so far easily been AAA quality. I'm also hoping the Witcher 2 turns out to be as good as it looks.

honestly i think all those games are great and looking forward to Crysis2 and will definately get DA2 later on this year.. the others are all great titles i enjoy playing..

I'd agree if it wasn't for your KZ3 comment. An 8.5 review score isn't why it didn't sell well.

I can tell you that I bought and enjoyed KZ2, but haven't touched KZ3 except for the two demos. I thought those demos were mediocre.

Dragon Age 2 didn't flop.

It also could be that Gamespot is being more stingy on giving out 9.0 scores. It's not like there is a big difference between a 9.0 or an 8.5, or any real difference at all actually. On a whim just about any of those 8.5 games could have easily scored a 9.0 - and in fact Dead Space 2 *WAS* a 9.0 on PS3. But who really cares at that point?

It's pretty stupid to call a game a "flop" if it misses it's mark by .5. Who decided that .5 is a flop? To me a flop has to miss it's mark by at least 2 points... or jeez how about at least 1 full point anyway. You can also call a game a flop if it grossly fails to live up to it's predecessor AND scores 1 point worse. It's completely silly to call flops when often times review scores themselves don't seem to make sense when you compared games reviewed one month to another. Right now Gamestop migth be stingy, at the end of the year might be new reviewers that feel like giving out 9.0's left and right. (i.e. too many games scoring 7.5 or 8.0 end up being great, whereas 9.0 games disappoint and were just a hyped up mess or rehash of a previous game... Black Ops I'm looking at you).
