Found this story on 1UP (sorry if old, from June 26/07):

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3160603

- 3 Red Rings of Death
- 2 disc read errors
- 2 dead on arrival
- several with random audio and video-related issues
- 1 exploded

all this happening to one guy Justin Lowe (profile: http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5564187)

Many people thought that he was a liar, but he ran a phone conversation (check the story link, it includes the phone conversation) with a Microsoft service rep, and asked the service rep to CONFIRM his list of tickets.

When is Microsoft going to recall their systems!?

Indeed as the consumer.

Also, old.

They always say it doesn't effect me until it happens to them. Sometimes it baffles me how some technology gets release prone to failing, didn't they tested it.MS should fire their quality testers and sue them!

I'm sure substandard components and the $6 assembly cost have nothing to do with it.

That's truly pathetic. This is why I'm waiting a few years to buy my Xbox 360. Sure, it comes with a warranty, but that doesn't make it OK. If I spend 400 dollars on something, I expect it to work. What happens if it breaks right after the warranty expires? Too risky for me. I want a 360, but I guess I'll just stick to playing my uncle's for awhile. I have easy access to that anyways.

It looks like I'll just buy a PSP, and stick with that, my DS, my Wii, my PC, and my multiple consoles from previous generations.

This makes buying a 360 that much harder for me. On one hand, I could buy one at Toys R Us and get a free game with it (more or less) for $400. But then I'd have to shell out some extra cash for extended warranty from MS which likely won't last that long (maybe what 3-4 years tops?). My other choice would be to buy a bundle from Costco which includes the Premium, extra wireless controller, a battery/charge pack and Costco's unlimited warranty for $100 more. I like saving money, but I also want my purchase to still function 5 years down the road. :?

That guy in the article is pretty patient. After the whole ordeal, he's still a 360 fan. I'm on my 3rd 360, and if this 3rd one fails, my patience would run really thin.

$6 is still quite expensive, considering that they're made in china. The chinese who make these thing don't make that much pay in one month

Is it enough for them to live decently? I'm guessing that if they get paid less, then the cost of living must be lower. How much lower, I don't know.

I laughed at 'exploded', I can just picture a 360 exploding like a bomb. Hopefully my 360 will be fine *touches wood'.
