Where did you hear this? I can't find it on the Lakers' website or ESPN. Is it official or just speculation?

Nevermind, I found an article about it:

http://commercialappeal.com/news/2008/feb/01/gasol-traded-lakers/

Just based on your post, I loved this trade. But you left out that they also gave up 2 first round draft picks (2008 and 2010). That's a pretty hefty price, but I think Gasol can contribute right now. The Lakers were already contenders with Bynum healthy, so this just confirms that. Look out for LA in April!

2 first rounders? Wow.

But I guess they won't be high picks, at least the 08 one.

Definitely contenders. Once Bynum gets back to 100% It will be a front-court to be reckon with. Bynum and Gasol. Kobe is probaly happy to get more help. It was a good trade for the Grizz as well since they weren't a good team with Gasol anyway and they get the Lakers 2008 and 2010 first rounders.

No reason to think either of them will be high picks. With Bynum and Kobe, why would you think the Lakers would be a lottery team in 2 years. :?

That's not a very good idea. Kwame Brown is going to blossom into a dominant center any time now and the Lakers will miss out on it. Gasol can only get you so far, while you can build a dynasty around Kwame in his prime.
Only kidding :P.

EDIT: Didn't see it already happened. Bad trade IMO for the Grizz, great for LA. Those draft picks will be very high.
I don't, but anything can happen. I know for sure this year's pick won't be low.

And with the Suns being a weak team, the Lakers should easily win the Pacific division and possibly the NBA title. This is assuming Gasol (and the rest of the team) remains healthy.

You never know. In 2009, Kobe could tear his ACL at the beginning of the year or something. I think the Lakers can be a top-4 team in the West for the next few years, don't get me wrong, but it's hard to predict 2-3 years in the future.

A couple years ago, people might've said the Heat would be a dominant force in the East for years to come (even though the team was getting old, they still had Wade). Look how that turned out.

Anyway, now I'm ticked off that the Bulls couldn't at least match this offer. This seems like a steal for LA.

We're getting a little ahead of ourselves here. The Suns are still an elite team and until the Lakers beat them in the playoffs or outlast them this will remain the case. Bseides, we haven't seen how well Gasol fits in yet.

Jarbis? Cmon man...Interesting deal. Lakers gave up a good package of players and picks, however older Gasol is a monster.

The Suns aren't the elite team they used to be - we could easily beat them in a 7 game series now. We beat them twice this year and the time we did lose we didn't have our number 2 player.

The Suns can't beat the Spurs or Lakers.

I think this is a great move for the Lakers. Bynum, Gasol, Odom, Bryant, and Fisher looks as good, on paper, as any other starting 5.

This just made my day, being a huge Laker fan and born and raised here in LA i literally jumped out of my chair when i read this. Finally got rid of the bum Kwame. This team is officially a contender.

Bynum-5

Gasol-4

Odom-3

Kobe-2

Fisher-1

finally we get a legit PF that can shoot and rebound and HOLD ON TO THE BALL. kobe finally has something to work with besides Bynum down low who is becoming one of the best young big men in the game and is only getting better, with them two down low and kobe leading them and a veteran PG who can stop us?

I want him fired. If Kwame freaking Brown could land Pau Gasol, then what the hell? We've had way better packages than this so I don't understand what's wrong.

This definitely changes things in the west. The Lakers want to contend now and proved that by moving a young PG, a not so sure C, a skilled vet Aaron Mckie, two first round picks, and the rights to Pau's brother playing in Spain. Sounds like a lot but it really isn't if you're a playoff team.

This was the best thing that could have happened to the Lakers. Kobe won't be asking for a trade anymore and he most likely won't opt out of his contract next year. The Lakers also got rid of Kwame Brown. Although it sucks we lost "Jarbis", but we didn't need Javaris with Fisher and Farmar. I think Kobe will stay a Laker for the rest of his career. Hats off to Mitch Kupchek and Jerry Buss.

Which is fine because Bynum plays like a 7footer. Gasol can play like a tall P foward.

I think you mean SF. The word "power" doesn't even slightly describe Gasol's game. Still, it gives the Lakers a formidable lineup and ensures that the Hornets path to the Finals has gotten even more arduous.

As if complacency wasn't enough of a potential problem...

The first draft pick traded means nothing due to the position the Lakers are in.

The second draft pick....we'll see if it means anything yet.
