And here we go, Trump opens up his huge campaign account and has began his assault against Biden, and as a leftist who usually votes Democrat, I have to say, this is a great campaign ad from Trump.
Trump does a few key things here. First, he hits Biden on his "support" of China throughout his career and ties Hunter to China as well. This shows how extensive the opposition research on Biden can be. Second, it exploits American's negative view on China and makes the attempt to cover up Trump's poor handling of the pandemic by blaming China. Third, he catches Biden in a flip flop by showing he agreed with Trump on banning travel to and from China despite calling it "xenophobic" before. And lastly, he gets the stutters and stumbles from Biden in, in an attempt to put his declining mental acuity on display.
Highly effective ad, and here is the thing. Trump has a MASSIVE campaign finance advantage and a MASSIVE technological advantage over Biden, maybe the biggest advantage ever for an incumbent. This allows Trump not only able to be more forceful in his messaging and in getting it out, but allows his campaign more flexibility.
Trump strategy right now is to reduce Biden and define the challenger early, like Bush in 2004 and Obama in 2012 were able to do. His campaign advantages make it even easier. And if the pandemic slows and the economy rebounds, he can pivot to a positive message while still burying Biden in attack ads and would definitely win re-election.
This is what happens when a nominee is not properly vetted. Democrats nominated a candidate with a huge opposition research file, declining mental acuity, a major enthusiasm gap, and a problem handling campaign finance and raising money. Plopping a dead donkey over the line can win in primaries, but is a sure loser in general elections. And I will say this, Biden has traits far more in common with general election losers than winners.
