If you have YLOD your PS3 wont turn on, and the red light indicator will flash yellow for about 1 second.

Just because you haven't experienced the YLOD happen on your or your friends consoles it doesn't make it a myth. It happens randomly and permanently "kills" your PS3. I've been unfortunate to have it happen on 2 of my PS3's.

Same here, Lost probably 3000+ hours of gameplay in one fell swoop... Having all my PS2 RPG game saves on there seemed like a great idea at the time, unfortunately there is no way to get them back off the HDD and onto a PS2 mem card

Just because it isn't there it doesn't mean it doesn't exsist. Like faith.

The YLOD is there though and has factual evidence to back it up.

Well I only know I used my PS2 for about 10 years and I got my PS3 a short time ago and I've never seen such a thing, maybe because I take good care of them ? I also don't know of anyone who has ever had that problem. However, it may be true, why not ?

Stop being ignorant. PS2s disk problems have been well documented. And the PS3s do have problems and i do take care of my systems. If you want to use illogical thinking then why has my PS3 died twice and lastedmuch less than my 360 which is guaranteed fail? SO based on my personal experience where my 360 has lasted years and my ps3 4 months and 8 months respectively that the 360 is more reliable? Hell no so dont based your one single experience and say crap about '"I Take care of my systems" and crying to tell people they dont take cares of theres?

Anyway on topic mine has died once to the ylod.

Haven't experienced a YLOD, I've been lucky. Probably coming close to it though, so I'm gonna back up my data and see how long it lasts before it dies or my HDD runs out. Then I'll replace my 3 year old 80G for a new 160 or 320G Slim :D

I had one PS3 for 3 years that succumbed to the YLOD I didn't want to go with a slim since I still have a large PS2 library so I got sony to send me a refurbed 60 gig model it was in the same location as the other PS3 and in 39 days that one also got the YLOD since I still had my warranty valid I was able to get another 60 gig model thats been lasting me awhile hopefully it sticks for at least another 3 years otherwise I'm just going to end up fixing it myself I've already shelved out $500 for the first PS3 and $185 for the refurb model.

To answer your question however the YLOD is indeed not a myth with the way these new consoles are outputting their power the life expectancy will be shorten by how much heat is dissipated and how properly ventilated it is, that's pretty much why majority of Wii's problems are with the DVD Drives.

big_boss1988

You're kidding right? There are YLOD issues posted all over youtube, go see for yourself. The YLOD is a general hardware failure. It can happen for any number of reasons but their is a common cause that is happening to mostly FAT PS3 consoles.

This is what happens when your PS3 finally packs in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdQ1ju4Tu9E

There you go dude, have another one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrmULDA2zFI&feature=related

and another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hPz6IhEST0&NR=1,

and another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51HEdLN50rU&feature=related

and another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPiIXFV1IPc&feature=related

and another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmLlvRtpHrA&NR=1&feature=fvwp

Now please tell me it's a myph.

this. I personally had an YLOD, so yeah, I can graant that it exists ... but maybe I'm a myth too? :O

And to make it absurd. I haven't been in America and I know nobody who has been there personally ... So maybe America is a myth too?

My first PS3 slim got the YLOD within 8 months. Also, I don't really understand this thread. How can YLOD be a myth if it has happened to millions of people and has been extensively documented and proven to occur? :|

YLOD is not a myth. I had have 3 Playstation 3's. None of them have gotten the YLOD, I have the PS3 60Giger, Which is supposed to be prone to this.

Also have the PS3 120Giger Slim, which are designed against the YLOD. had the PS3 40Giger. This phat model was the "best" at resisting YLOD. I sold mine when I boughtthe fabled B/C 60Giger. So Ihad 3 PS3's none have gotten the YLOD.

I never have kept my Playstation 3's in an entertainment cabinet. None have overheated and died, even after an all-night gaming session. I never experience the YLOD but it does happen to some people. maybe they got unlucky. (I take good care of my systems)

i think my ylod was the result of power outages in my area... because no way in the world can my 360 get the E74 error then less then 4 days later my 60 gig ps3 get ylod. last year i had the same problem but it was my hdtv and my pc that both went out in the same week!!

This is a good read;

Link.

Of course it doesn't make the PS3 a bad console, every product had the potential to fail. I've had my slim since launch and it's completely fine, some people are lucky (and look after their system) and others are just not so lucky.

ylod was occuring because they were no longer allowed to use lead in the solder. i guess the slims have better cooling fans because they have not yet experienced the problems. every 60gb will get it sooner or later so be ready

It's not a myth. I know someone who got the YLOD with his 80 GB PS3. In fact, I plan on sending in my PS3 to a third party company to have the thermal paste changed and have it cleaned up before it suffers from the YLOD.
