I recently moved my PS3 in my room so now it is closer to me, so I don't know if I just never really noticed it before, being that I was further away from it when it was in my living room, but it is seriously louder than my 360, in fact, the 360, when just on the dashboard, is virtually silent, but about 5 minutes after I turn on my PS3 the fans kick in hard, even when I'm on the XMB menu. After awhile the area around my PS3 could warm a family of four in the Winter.

I was playing a game for a few hours and it didn't freeze or anything, so it hasn't effected my gaming yet...

Does anyone know whats wrong? Is this normal?

lol that sounds weird because a you can hear a 360 from a mile away while i can only hear my ps3 from a foot away. nice try the only way a ps3 is going to be loud is if it has 360 cooling system or you have the dustiest house and take no care for you ps3

What do you mean "Nice try"? I'm not a fanboy. I have all 3 systems. You can check my profile if you want. So "nice try" at attempting to discredit me.

I don't know why, but it IS louder than my 360. That's why I came here for help.

Mine is as quiet as a high-end DVD player....as if it had no fans at all.

You only hear the fans after several hours of gameplay, but even then it is nothing....I mean nothing compared to the jet engine taking off when you first turn on the xbox 360.

The TC is full of it.

Wow. So just because your PS3 works fine, I'm full of it. I never said "OMFG, TEH PS3 is LOUDER THAN TEH 360!!11" I said MINE is. I know the PS3 has a reputation for being quiet. That's why I'm curious as to why mine is suddenly loud. I came here for help, not for a bunch of fanboys to piss and moan at the possibility of a faulty PS3.

I heard ps3 got 3 fan-speeds and adjust it after how warm it is, so guess your ps3 is warm and running at high fan-speed.

Good idea. Point the PS3 towards a closed box and pray to God that it won't destory itself....what a plan.

Try that with a 360. ;)

The thing will be dead within an hour..

That's why I made that topic, but everyone said it should be fine, and it hasn't frozen or crashed. It's just strangely loud...And are you trying to tell me that I'm the only person here who has their PS3 in an entertainment center with a closed off back? I was under the impression the the 360 was the only system to screw up over that. It still has plenty of ventilation room and I don't have anywhere else to put it.

try moving it to wear the top isnt covered by the wood and see how that goes there are some fans on the top, and is it hot or warm in your room? because if it is that is a reason the ps3 will kick into high gear mine goes on high gear occasionally but other than that it seems quiet.

Try cleaning your PS3. I use a vacuum cleaner with the brush adapter. Works well.

As for ventilation, that's spot seems to be all right, but you never know. My dad has his covered all around except the front and it broke after 3 months.

Try reading the instruction manual. If you can't find an answer in there, call Sony Customer Support. I'm not sure why yours is so loud, as mine and most everyone's I know is very quiet. You might have one of those defective consoles.

Also, these fanboys are kind of ridiculous. The fellow's just trying to ask if anyone else has/had this problem.

Like some people said already, you might want to see if its some dust you can clear out. My PS3 is way quiet compared to my 360, hopefully you can get a little bit more quieter.

No doubt, my 360 is louder than a jet engine. Normally when I play games/watch HD DVD's on the 360 I have to have the volume at an absurd level to drown out the noise. Yes you can hear the PS3, but IMO it is comparably reasonable beside other consoles. From loudest to most silent= 360>PS3>Wii.

if you have it in a bookshelf like that there's horrible ventilation. all the heat goes up and reflects right back down on the unit. it won't kill a ps3 but it will probably make it really warm and make the fan go to its highest setting. that could be the reason.

you should put it somewhere it can breathe better.

Try doing a fan test, its probably gettings a lot of dust in it being placed in the vertical position like that. like someone said before search on youtube for 'PS3 fan test' if you haven't done it before.

Mine is whisper quiet, but gets quite warm after an hour or so. It used to be much worse before, when I had it on the carpet. I now have it sitting on the carpet, but on top of a laptop cooler that I bought specifically to keep the PS3 cool.

I made this topic not too long ago and everybody said it was fine where it is.

lol at all the idiots accusing TC of lying and calling him a fanboy.

And no, that is not a good place to put your PS3. It needs at least a foot of space on all sides. The reason it's so loud is because the fan is working overtime, which is caused by the heat build up, which is caused by the cramped space.

Also, be sure to unplug everything every 2 weeks or so and vacuum out the vents on your PS3. It helps keep it clean so that it's not circulating dust particles in its atmosphere.

EDIT: Oh my God, nevermind, old topic is ancient.

I still lol at the idiots of yore.

What seems to be the problem is that the PS3 fan speed controller if it has one is broken and it turns it to high setting. Looks like maybe the cpu or gpu temp sensor or whatever it is, is broken and it thinks its overheating when you turn it on, so it goes to highest setting which it would never do under normal conditions unless called for keeping down extreme heat. Anyway, yeah the highest fan setting is super loud, I also want to make sure that you dont have anything stuck in your ps3, somethings u dont know about maybe? Kids playing around it? just asking. That sicks, what version do you have, must be a fat one, I doubt the new slim has as big of a fan like the originals to make the amount of noise you describe.

True that, had same expirience at a friends house. Oh TC, if it is a 40 or the new 80gb or whatever newer ones, then dont worry they have smaller 45nm manufactured chips which produce less heat than old ones. Sucks your PS3 expirience is irritated by some stupid mistake probably on the factory line, or a fail of a small electical component. it might be a bad sensor for fan, be happy it goes to highest setting and keeps it as cool as it can be, than just staying at lowest or not even turning on fan.
