Just wondering

I've played some really great games this gen, but nothing that quite rises to the level of a masterpiece.
I think Dead Space is still my favorite, but it's been so long since I played it I think my opinion is tainted by nostalgia at this point.
Mass Effect 2 was awesome, but the cover system was half-broken, it had frame rate issues and I didn't find it had a lot of replayability.
I had a ton of fun with Need For Speed: Shift, but that thing had way too many bugs to ever approach being called a masterpiece.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the only game I felt was even close to being a "masterpiece". Though compared to last gen games it still falls a little short.
The closest I can think of are Demon's Souls, Skyrim, Deus Ex: HR, and the Bioshock series (with 2 having the better story but 1 having the initial wow factor, and with Infinite most likely having its own wow factor and great story).
metal gear solid 4
heavy rain
RDR had the qualities but was marred by lack of creativity and repetition
not many masterpieces really...a lot of great games that i have put tons of time into, but those two stand out as the masterpieces to me
dunno if you'd call it a masterpiece but the original Bioshock is the best game ever made so far on ps3 imo.
Without a doubt, "IL*2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey" - The physics and flight controls are awesome, the missions are accurate to the theater, and the fact that you can ramp it up to simulation conditions is unparalleled in console gaming (although "Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising" gets close).
was Tom Clancy's Hawx any good? cause i seriously been thinkin about getting that game lately..Without a doubt, "IL*2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey" - The physics and flight controls are awesome, the missions are accurate to the theater, and the fact that you can ramp it up to simulation conditions is unparalleled in console gaming (although "Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising" gets close).

Tbh I haven't really found any I would call a masterpiece, but if I had a gun to my head I would probably say Mass Effect 2. I liked how you could manipulate the story in that one. They just don't make epics like they used to. Nowadays it's all pretty graphics, but no soul to these kind of games.
Masterpiece? hmmmmm
well I'd say the Mass Effect series is damn close when taken as a whole, but not any of the individual games are quite that level.
GTA IV is a great crime epic, incredible gaming world, good voice acting, but the actual gameplay falls a little flat. ditto L.A. Noire.
I'd put forward Dragon Age: Origins (on PC, not so sure about teh console versions), great cla ssic fantasy setting and plot, some real role-playing, and good old fashoined hard-core RPG gameplay. visually pretty dull though.
Dead Space is my favourite game, that is what I define as a masterpiece. Bioshock is also a masterpiece of video game art set within my favourite fictional setting ever!
Anyone who had played all of the Metal Gear Solid games before "Guns of the Patriots" came out will agree that MGS4 is not only a masterpiece, but THE masterpiece of this generation.
Fallout 3 and Skyrim were utter exceptional experiences that I have no problem giving the "Masterpiece" label to.
I would also give the nod to Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, and gasp...CoD 4. That game was WAY ahead of its time.
Honorable Mentions: Little Big Planet, Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, and Bioshock.
I loved the Uncharted series. 2&3 especially. Batman: Arkham Asylum/City, MGS 4, Borderlands, and Darksiders, Dead Space 1&2IMO were all great games. Looking forward to Darksiders 2 and Borderlands 2. But I don't feel there were truly any masterpieces this generation. May beUncharted 2&3 come close.
For this I'd have to say Metal Gear Solid 4. It is the perfect example of what a video game, and a sequel should be (the other MGS games are as well, but I'm speaking specifically about this generation).
The story was top-notch (although complex) throughout the whole series, and the telling of the story was executed to perfection. It concluded the saga of Solid Snake in an epic manner.
The graphics (for its time) were amazing, and whats most impressive is that it was all done in real-time, including the cut-scenes. For anyone who played this game, the epic split-screen Snake vs.the Geckos/Raiden vs. Vamp battle comes to mind when thinking about this. Also there were very very few graphical glitches which is important.
The gameplay improved upon its predecessors in countless ways. The controls were completely revamped and alot less frustrating than the previous ones. You could literally play the game like a stealth action game and as a third-person shooter at the same time. The boss battles were very diverse and challenging, not to mention the beauty and the beast corps ladies were gorgeous. The Big Momma set piece and Metal Gear Rex set-piece was epic as well.
The voice acting was superb, the soundtrack and musical score add a ton to the overall gameplay experience too although Im not very knowledgeable about this aspect.
This game incorporated these things, and a lot more, and did so in a fashion that very few games (and I mean maybe 3 or 4 other games ever) have been able to do so well. Anyone who played this game all the way through would be able to vouch for me.
Well the strongest cases for that on the PS3 (given the forums we're on) would be the Batman Arkham Games and Rayman Origins IMO, however, the greatest games this gen are not actually playable on PS3 IMHO...
