Square, Circle, Triangle and... X?

X isn't a shape...

You ever wonder why they went with the buttons that they went for when they first made playstation?

Square, Circle and Triangle all fit together, but... X?

I guess it wouldn't be very pleasing to say..

"No, no, you have to push Rhombus to jump."

I think X is a shape actually...Ryder123

They don't nessessarily have to be shapes. Just simple symbols.

Well if you look at the real definition of shape, a shape can be anything, an X may not be a regular shape but it is still a shape.

well you know hypothetically......just maybe....
by shape X ( which is jumping in a lot of games) they meant smt like shapeless shape :shock:
that has no shape > like jumping > shapeless > which means that it has no shape > Thus, it proves that X is some sort of X > which has no beginning nor end!!! >>>>

Im pretty sure for an object to be consider a shape especialy on drawn out has to be basically an enclosure which is created by the connection of a series of lines or even one line. like a rectangle with four lines and a cirlce being one. so i dont think x is really a shape. however im sure X is there because the most important button :) its meant for most of the "enter" "next" etc. buttons

Actually, Square and triangle are the ones I cant figure out. O is normally used as an OK button (its also the OK button in ASIA), and X is used as the negative button, which is also its use in Asia. For the other 2, I just dont know what would they mean.kenshinhimura16

The only time I see "O" as the okay button, is in Asia.

think of it this way

O requires 1 line to make, 1 curvy line that is

X requires 2 lines to make

Triangle requires 3 lines to make

Square requires 4 lines to make.

This is how I always see it.

Sorry dude, Dodecahedron's are 3D. I don't think it would fit on the controller. :)

think of it this way

Nothing, but the idea of shapes may have come from X and O lol.

that actually explains so much. All my import games use O to progress through the menus and X to go back. While american games tend to use X to progress through the menus and O to go back.

You know for some reason I always say it Triangle, Circle, X, Square I don't know why either I also assumed everyone else said it that order as well It was kinda weird to see it said differently but anyway I think X is there to mean cancel because in the Japanese game on the PS2 Circle was always the OK button and X was always cancel.
