like a vast majority of Japanese characters in games and anime (not sure if this includes real life since I haven't been there), his last name is San... Ryu san.....san is sometimes interchangeable with sama or kun.... (yes, I'm joking.) I think his last name is Hoshi...or at least that's what they called him in the movie.
In East Asia (China, Korea, Japan), last name is placed before first name.
such as Yao Ming. Yao is his last name.

But what about hideo kojima? hideo is the first name.
Because you are reading about him in a western publication or website, that's the way it's going to be printed for YOU... if you could read Japanese, you would see the name laid out differently (and your understanding of those languages would transpose it properly).
