PSP 2 - No UMD - Maybe UMD 2.0?

Has anyone considered that the reason Sony is denying 'removing' the UMD drive from the PSP is that they are going to be adding a new version of it?

I like the idea of just downloading everything (provided they give us a hard-drive) but a next-gen PSP game could easily be 10 gigs right? So a small blu-ray(ish) version of the UMD would be able to hold plenty...then they also wouldn't upset the many UMD disc current owners...

Maybe we'll get official info by E3 this year...

I can see them taking the DS route and introducing their own flash cartridges. Why? Flash Memory is cheap right now, and most PSP games come under 1GB, and with the quanities that Sony would be producing, it would cost no more than a dollar or two for the chips. I can also see sony doing a trade-in program for early adopters of the PSP2. You can send them your UMD based games and movies, and for free, they will replace them with a flash copy.havokmaster

I agree, the trade-in program would help the transition. I wouldn't mind going UMD-less if I could trade in my UMDs for digital copies

I don't believe for 1 minute that the next psp will rely solely on digital distribution. I think sony is going to use some other format for the next psp. Maybe even something cartridge based to boost battery life.BuryMe

No, I doubt they will do it. I also doubt they will release a PSP2 anytime this year or next year. The PSP needs more time to establish a decent library - cutting it off now will just render the library "incomplete," in my mind. And with sony announcing major PSP titles, as well as Square's major PSP titles ... It's not as if they're cutting off support for the original PSP just yet.

1. iPhone is a gaming machine 3rd.

2. iPhone didn't have a previous library of material hardcopy games.

since sony is unable to take nintendo down a peg, i doubt theyll risk it again, if psp 2 comes, you know darn well ds 2 will come and do damage lol, these are rumors god, people think sony workin on psp2 ,, not!@ they probably working on ps4 ,

I want the UMD. Why not put it in, if you don't use it fine, it won't be causing you any harm, beside taking up some space.idk761
