Hi guys,

I am doing a diagnostic to find out what is the cause of the bricks and what systems are affected. If you have any kind of problem or your PS3 is bricked, please answer the following questions:

1. Did you have custom themes/icons?
2. Did you change the wave colour?
3. Did you have a disc in the PS3 while updating?
4. Did you download via PC or PS3?
5. What version of PS3 do you have? 60GB, 80GB, etc.
6. When did you puchase your PS3?
7. How many controllers do you have?
8. Were they all connected?
9. Do you have a Blue Tooth headset?
10. Did you upgrade your HDD?

Thank you for your time. Hopefully this will expose the problem so that Sony can rid of it once and for all.

MODS: I know there is a thread for all 2.40 related topics, but I felt that this needed it's own to help us track down the problem as fast as we could.

From what I know, the may affected where those who had a game in with the option of Auto Start turned on. So when the system rebooted to do the installation, it created a conflict between the Auto Start and the initialiation of the patch which caused the brickness. But From my 50 friends that have them here where I live, none who updated it (around 30) had any problems with it. Myself included.

Do you think it's the lems that are causing this? My friend updated last night and he said it was fine, in fact, he's rubbing it in my face that I don't have it and he does.

That doesn't really explain it. It just says the solution is to reformat. It's the same as PCs; when it breaks, reformat it. I want to locate the exact problem.

I don't know if this helps guys, but I have nothing on auto and haven't had a problem with anything, including GTAIV or the 2.4 upgrade. My games don't auto load, I don't auto-sign on and I don't see messages sent me while in game. I just hate anything that automatically does stuff. Don't know why. But I haven't had one problem with my console. Yes, I just jinxed myself.

Mine didn't "brick" either. I don't even have auto sign in on. I shut it off a few weeks ago. Guess I could sense something. Can't wait until the problems are fixed for those that didn't wait up late to download it.

I have auto sign in on, and I receive messages at any time including when I'm playing a game. I haven't had one single problem with the update so far so I hope that I won't have one at all. I'm using the great features that the patch has and I love it so I hope that notihing will go wrong just because some people are having it and saying that it happened. It could all be a lie, or it probably isn't. What Sony needs to do is fix this problem ASAP or they will get a lot of complaints and PS3s sent in for repair. YOU CAN DO IT SONY!!!

Its probably because they had their game disc's in the PS3 at the update process. I removed my MGS4 BD just before installing the update using a mass storage device, whic is a lot safer.

Was a disc in your drive? If there was, your system might have gotten bricked. The disc plays an important role. Its better not to have any disc in the PS3 while updating the system. Since the disc might auto load right after the system has rebooted, conflicting with it.

I feel sorry for those that got their systems bricked. I was scared to update my system after reading all the posts about systems getting bricked after the update. But realized I couldnt play MGO until I update my system. So I updated it and lo and behold, nothing went wrong. Thank God.

3.Yup, MGS4, of course, what else!

4. Via PS3

6. see 5

7. one, Sixaxis

8. Only via Bluetooth

9. Nope

10. and Nope

And finally, for now, my system hasn't bricked. But I am not going to change the game disc or play any other games for now, because I think that this still can happen to my console as well .

Nar man you made the right choice. It just this one update and i'm sure they will fix it soon. Plus it might of been everyone yelling at sony to get it out there that they didn't get to fully test it.

2.40 is fine in my 80gb ps3, I had a disk in but had auto run off, I also have auto sign in on.

Yes only posts I seen yesterday was just that people weren't happy with the update nothing about ps3's getting bricked. This is real odd. And yea after reading the article here it did come across my mind if 360 owners masking as ps3 owners saying they had issues. But then again I didn't see not one post about issues with 2.40.

Okay if their PS3s are bricked does that automatically mean they can not be repaired? Because I know some people are saying their games dont work but their ps3 still turns on. So if that's the case why not just wait for an update rather than lose all your HDD info.

I'm thinking its the custom XMB since the In-Game XMB is probably compatible with the original XMB not the Custom one.

My PS3 updated flawlessly and I had a PS2 game in the drive at the time. I have auto sign-in on and auto start for the disc turned off. I also have my system set to where if there is no activity on the XMB for a certain amount of time the F@H project will auto-start.

The problem doesn't have to do with your system. Sony's website was infected with a virus yesterday. It made the file download incomplete in some cases. I wanted to download it onto a flashdrive, when i heard it came out, But the first time I downloaded it, it was only 57Mb. I was suspicious so I downloaded it again and this time it was 130Mb (The normal size).

One thing everyone with a bricked PS3 has in common is that the download bar jumped from 50% to 100%, probably not downloading the software that boots your PS3.

Anyway that is my two cents, I hope it helps anyone who is confused...

First, I have 2 PS3's, and original 60GB model and a MotormStorm 80GB bundle. I DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE 2.40 FIRMWARE UPDATE.

Well.. Let me answer...

One thing everyone with a bricked PS3 has in common is that the download bar jumped from 50% to 100%, probably not downloading the software that boots your PS3.

AIH_PSP

My PS3 always jumps somewhere around the 50 line to 100%

Hmmmm... Mine always starts working faster from about 60%, But when I downloaded it for the first time last night, It teleported from exactly 50%

Did it break?

Thank god I didn't install the firmware after I downloaded it, I was scared after I read that It bricked some PS3's...

I only had 1 issue since updating. I was booted from PSN once for a few minutes but never had a problem since. The XMB does run slower while playing. I hope my PS3 doesn't brick as a result.

[QUOTE="kenshinhimura16"]From what I know, the may affected where those who had a game in with the option of Auto Start turned on. So when the system rebooted to do the installation, it created a conflict between the Auto Start and the initialiation of the patch which caused the brickness. But From my 50 friends that have them here where I live, none who updated it (around 30) had any problems with it. Myself included.AIH_PSP
Do you think it's the lems that are causing this? My friend updated last night and he said it was fine, in fact, he's rubbing it in my face that I don't have it and he does.

 I highly doubt MS fans from a system wars forum on GS caused a global company to pull their update. Jeez. Mine updated fine, but a fellow GUFU member had his brick. It just seems to hit random consoles. I'm curious as to what the cause is. Hopefully when Sony figures it out, they'll disclose what the problem was.

Mines been working fine ever since I downloaded 2.4, my PS3 even turned off accidentily due to a power cut when I was downloading it, not installing it if that makes any difference. I really think this is being blown out of proportion.

I updated 2.4 about 2:30 am EST on Wednesday. Downloaded it over my wireless network to PS3 and installed it. Everything works fine at the moment. XMB pops up in game (MGS4), games load, can see friends profiles/trophies...etc. As far as I can tell its totally normal.

I dont know why people are having problems. Could be user error, or could be something wrong with their network when downloading. I actually fell asleep while downloading 2.4, so for all I know the PSN knomes sprinkles some magic dust on my PS3 to patch it.
