My TV has a max resolution of 1080i/720p.

If I set my PS3's resolution automatically, it selects 1080i.

Should I stick with 1080i OR should I manually set the resolution to 720p?

I think that I have heard that 720p is better than 1080i (but if this is true, then why would the default set to 1080i)?

Also, for my other TV that is 1080p, in the PS3 resolution settings, should I disable all the lower settings (i.e. uncheck the boxes for 420 and 720) so that everything displayes in 1080p?

Thanks for any info.

I run my 1080i with 720p because for whatever reason, it just looks better that way. But don't take our advices for it, do what you feel is best for you. Not everyone is alike.

I had mine set to 1080i, I didn't really notice much besides the menu icons being smaller. When I play a game that is only in 720p it just goes into 720p automatically

Leave it to select the best resolution for your TV. So if it has the resolutions of 480i,720p, and 1080i selected leave it at that. My TV automatically chooses 1080i/p so I leave it like that and usually in the game it switches it to the best supporting res for whichevergame you're playing.

When i had a 1080i/720p tele i always played in 720p for both movies and games. I now have a 1080p tv and still do not check the 1080i box, i just use 720p and 1080p.

This is really simple, if you have to choose between 720p or 1080i then its all about what framerate is to be used. A game that runs at 30 fps won't suffer if its run in 1080i, but if its a game that runs at 60fps it would suffer in 1080i because it doesn't support above 30fps. hence you would have to go for 720p for best result.

There is another thing to consider here too. TVs cannot have a native resolution of both 1080i and 720p. Your TV's native resolution is either one or the other and most likely it is 720p and just downscales 1080i. Also most 720p TVs are actually 768p so there might be a slight advantage to using 1080i as it could look better downscaled to 768p than 720p being upscaled to 768p. Either way, try both and see what you think looks better, that's what I did and I eventually settled on 720p because of the better framerate most of the time. I just want people to understand your TV does not natively support both, it has to scale one of them.

I believe in trial and error. Try one for 10 - 15 min then try the other. Then decide.

Ok - thanks very much for the info.

I will try comparing 720p v. 1080i, although I doubt I will notice a difference because I just have trouble judging small differences in video qaulity.

If I don't notice a difference, I will just leave the TV on the 1080i setting since that is my TV's default when I connect the PS3.

Ok I have a quick question here myself, I have a 1080p Samsung and I currently have the display settings selected to all of them so the TV selects the best setting when I start up the game, but the problem is, even with the 1080p supported games, it never selects 1080p, it always selects the 720p. Should I leave it as be, change my display settings so it only plays the games in 1080p, or something else? Thanks

I just leave mine set to 1080i, because movies look better in 1080i. And most games are set at 720p max anyways so...

720p is usually better for gaming, but I don't really notice any difference.
