Oh well...

If people still want to play PS2, then they can buy a PS2 for cheap. But obviously by taking out B/C, it makes the PS3 less expensive...

thats a rip off because PS2 is still in business and u can find 90% of old PS2 games at Gamestop.

Imagine Gamestop Price for MGS 2= $5.99 PSN Price for MGS 2= $14.99

Um, yeah thats the whole idea. Why put out a system just for ppl to continue buying games for the prior PS2. They took out BC to push software sales. I'm glad to have my 60GB converted to a 300GB PS3 but I don't understand why ppl get mad at sony for losing exclusives titles and not bringing out more games when you continue to buy ps2 software over ps3 software. If u want to play ps2 games keep your ps2, but if you want to get more exclusives and better ps3 title you're going to have to support the system. point blank. and i agree, Get Over It bruh. Business 101 aka economics aka supply and demand. stop the supply of bc equals more demand of ps3 software and hardware.

The PS2 has been out for almost 10 years. Who's fault is it that you don't have one? Their is an AWESOME bundle coming out this holiday season. You could get a PS2 fat (that works just as well as the new slims) for AT LEAST $50. Like the user above said PlayStaion 3 tends to make me think of games for the PlayStation 3, not the PS2.

there was absolutly no reason for sony to completaly remove bc, ppl who wanted it gladely pay the $100 more, and the only reason ppl bought PS2 games to play on PS3 was because there wasnt that many PS3 games yet, that has since changed, and weekly PS3 software sales are twice as much as PS2s, and there is over 10 times more PS2s out there. also how else am i suppose to play my PS2 games on a 46" tv without the game looking like crap

Game set and match, PS3 was often viewed as poorly ported titles so not many early adopters didnt buy PS3 software and i didnt blame them. So sony foolishy wanted future PS3 owners to buy PS3 games only with the 40 GB. Thats the only reason i hear that sony removed BC

I have over 100 PS2 games. Everybody collects something and for me its playstation games. I also have around 70 PS1 games but luckily they still work.

Why would Sony need to push ppl to buy PS3 software. The reason somebody buys a PS3 is to play PS3 games. Bad PS3 software sales because bad PS3 software. Sony is the company that made BC popular so now they are taking it away? That's ridiculous.

The only new PS2 games coming out now are ports, they just continue to support it so they can say that it had a 10 year lifespan. I wouldn't care cuz my PS2 slim still works and probably always will if I need it to but in the future regular TV's aren't going to be around anymore just HDTV's. PS2 on an HDTV looks like garbage. PS3 upscaling makes them look decent and it's nice to have one system to play all my games. It just seems like Sony has forgotten where they came from.

Now I have to pray to GOD that my 60GB lasts forever...

Then they need to make actual Playstation games instead of the westernized crap they've been pumping out.

Well good thing I have a BC in my PS3. I actually always use it too. I was just playing Killzone last night...its not a half bad game, and for $7.99, I am enjoying myself pretty well.

Yea, I mean seriously. Why do people care? I personally bought my PS3 to play PS3 games, not to play PS2 games... I have a PS2 for that... Plus its 2 years into the products lifecycle, GIVE IT UP ALREADY.

The 60 GB had been out for over a year, why? So that those who still wish to play PS2 games can do so, the PS3 80 GB version has been out for almost two years and you can still purchase it and it has almost perfect backwards compatibility.

Those who care or cared for PS2 B/C had plenty of time to own B/C system and in fact still have.

Those who don't care for it already have PS2 console or decided to do a least a little research in last two years.

Sony gave plenty of time, it's up to consumers. There really is no excuse or complains.

I'm personally glad B/C had been cut out, it's time to continue focusing on PlayStation 3 and it's future.

Unless the games are completely reworked so as to run naively on the hardware, that would be impossible. (PS1 games are emulated).

Of course that's another drawback... now Sony will almost certainly never introduce a service for downloading classic PS2 titles.

Does it really matter for B/C? If you have a PS2 just use that for your PS2 gaming needs. I have gamecube games and the WII has B/C and I barely use it.

Whatever happened to those days when B/C didn't matter?

It would presumably require more reworking, since at least every hard drive equipped 360 is backwards compatible.

But the PS2 can and eventually will break. Plus having it play on the PS3 is both convenient and cost-effective (*unlimited* memory cards).

The same thing that happened to the days of the typewriter. Technology today is supposed to be about ever greater convenience.

I'm more worried what happens if you ever need to use the warranty and now you have NO backwards compatible option. You don't know how pissed I would be if I didn't get my b/c option.

Sony probably wants you to buy a PS2 since they're losing money on the PS3 and actually still making profit off the PS2. They'll force yout to buy $130 PS2 for your PS2 classics, while you have your PS3 only able to play PS1 games.

You know, after reading yet another thread asking why their PS3 can't play PS2 games, I have a sneaking suspicion that many of the people buying the system have no idea that it's NOT backwards compatible. And I have to wonder if this move will result in Sony's support lines being hammered with calls from people thinking their new console is broken.

Since 80GB there is no emotion chip in the PS3, all is software emulation and the software is already there. Putting the same piece of software in the 40GB and upcoming 80GB costs nothing.

The only reason of removing BC is to force people to buy new PS3 games rather than having a cheap Blu-ray player w/ thousands of cheap PS2 games which are still very good for many people and casual gamers.

This is partially incorrect. The 80GB model, while does not have the Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU) as you mention, still has the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) integrated into it's chipset. So it is NOT all software emulation. It still uses the GS hardware while emulating the EE to give backwards compatibility. The 40GB model lacks both chips.

Heck yeah. The first models of PS3 back at launch had the EE chip while these new PS3's were running PS1 & PS2 games from a emulator.
