I bought the 40 GB PS3, the one that does not play PS2 games.

I want to get it hooked up to the internet. I know an ethernet cable can do that but I have heard that the 40 GB has a wireless connection. So my question is how do I get it online? Do I need an ethernet cable or do I want to do it wirelessly? IfWhatever the answer is please walk me through it like I am 4 years old. I am good at setting systems up but when it comes to hooking them up online I am clueless.

Thanks!!!

Visually

You connection would like this

Ethernet/Direct/Cable Connection
Modem -> Router -> PS3

Wireless Connection
Modem -> Wireless Router -> PS3

If you plan on going through wireless, on your PS3, go to Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings > Easy Setup > Wireless > Scan > Save.

Ok it gives me a list of access points I can use. Is there a certain one I should choose? Also one of them says ____ Home. The blank being my nextdoor neighbor's last name. What does that mean? Can I use it?

Thanks for your help!

If you want to steal internet, then use your neighbors, it might have a password. But if he gives you the ok to use it, then go for it.

If you have your own, then it should be the first one since the signal strength should be stronger.

Whoever set up your internet, whether be you, family, parents or so,

2WIRE692 seems to have a password on it. When it asks for WEP key or WPA or WPA-2, basically it's asking for a password.

If you have a modem (which is your internet) and you plan on using the internet for more than one computer (like the PS3), you need to buy a router.

Since you want to connect Wirelessly, you need a Wireless router.

PS3 has Wifi, meaning it can connect wirelessly. But you need the wireless router to connect to the PS3.

If you plan on buying a Wireless router, check out Frys or Best Buy. Also, try to buy a Wireless N router .

The one I have is a Wireless N router: Netgear on sale at Frys for $70. Ask the people that work there which Wireless N router is preferred and they should recommend you something.

Does the PS3 support Wireless N? Because if it does that would be awesome. And anewperfectday, you're a very helpful person :D

Last question... If I Wanted to connect it wired would I just need an ethernet cable? Or would I also need a wired router if there is such a thing?

Yes. All PS3's do. Even though I have a wireless router, I still connect my PS3 with a wired connection

hahah thanks, well there was a thread last time about people claiming that Wireless G routers are more compatible with PS3. However, the majority of the people that posted there had Wireless N routers and it was extremely rare to get disconnected. I have yet to experience a bad connection or an internet drop via wireless. :)

Normally a Wireless router gives you two options, to connect through ethernet cable *wired* or connect wirelessly. Since you want to connect wirelessly, you wouldn't need any wires between the router and the PS3

My 60gb came with ethernet cable, so I'm guessing all PS3's should have one. But the length of the cable isn't very long
