You may have heard all the rumors about 2.40 arriving this month, with some even as going as far as stating a release on June 10th. Well it gives me great pleasure to confirm this date from my insider who says that right now, Sony has set the current firmware release date for 06/10/08. However he did put great emphasis that Sony could still possibly bring the update forward as well as back however it is very likely it will arrive on that exact day which happens to be a Tuesday. According to our colleagues of videogaming247:
- Sony is currently checking if all games are compatible with the in-game XMB. Theoretically, the new features should be available on all games, but for a minority of them, it could be that the current menu is kept.
- A patch will be required to play your own music during the game, the use of music the user from being added to the new development tools.
- Likewise for trophies. Their use is in the hands of developers, which means he will have to wait some time before they can enjoy the games today.
- Some features like viewing your photos will not be available on the in-game XMB in 2.40.

I don't get what this means. Does that mean we will have to wait even longer for a patch to come out to play music in the game? Or do you have the option to download the patch with the firmware update, meaning the patch is availible at the same time the update is, but it's just optional?

The lap timer in the upper right corner is still moving while he's going through the xmb, so no auto-pause.
that makes it a bit less tasty to me. It's no deal breaker but it would seem logical to implement an auto pause when launching the xmb. Wouldn't want to get lapped while perusing your tunes looking for a song or checking your messages. I guess you could just pause the game beforehand though. Just one more step.

the custom soundtrack functionality would be available per se although each game released prior to the update would require a patch to allow the functionality and it's not been determined who will be updating to allow for the functionality and who won't.

u have to wait for a patch i guess b4 u can listen to music
the person playin must be retarded or somethin... BUT it does look legit.
n ooo!!!.... the date n the time come up when u access the in game xmb! a very small, unnoticed feature... but in my opinion will come in handy n is needed.
one crazy thing i hope to see one day is a to have sports ticker/news ticker up all the time. n also be able to listen to online radio during gameplay. that would be nice
No, probably not. You don't have to be on Xbox Live to get Achievments but you have to be online to download the update which contains the trophy though :P.
The feature itself will be really cool, but even better, it'll shut up all the people who complained non-stop when each new firmware update came out that DIDN'T have in-game XMB.
Sounds awesome, defo what the PS3 is missing atm, just makes the console and games feel so disconnected from your freinds and everything else, in comparison to the 360.
