So, I'm pondering getting a used PS3 to play all it's exclusives but given my distinct lack of knowledge of the console, I don't want to jump on the first one I see.

What are the older BC models like? I've heard reports of people getting the YLOD on the older consoles while the slim doesn't have as many hardware faults.

I won't be using the BC functionality as all my PS1 and PS2 games are long gone, so it's not necessary to me.

I'm not worried about Hard drive size, as I said, I have a 360 and PC for multiplats and doubt I'll be getting a lot of DLC, so it's not an issue.

I'm not looking to spend a lot of cash because I can certainly live without a PS3 and I may or may not even get one. Lets say no more than 200 quid.

Whats the best model to get at that pricepoint or thereabouts?

Also, while I'm at it, any decent games I should know of, apart from the obvious ones?

Thank you all. :D

My cousins slim PS3 died. My 80 gig fat is still going strong and I have a few thousand hours of playtime on it. Any video gameconsole can break just take care of it and hope for the best. Never buy a used system. Get a new one and go with what you can afford.

Problem is you can't get 80GB consoles new anymore as far as I'm aware.

I'm not buying a brand new one unless by some divine miracle Sony announce a pricedrop to sub €200.

Buying a PS3 was just something that popped into my head today, I've not completely commited myself to buying one.

Slim, my slim plays ps1 Games and Ps2 games and works perfectly fine. Not to mention is smaller and more lightweight than the fat one. What you rather have? Although I've read a lot of people saying their slim doesn't do backward.

I don't think you have a slim if it can play PS1/2 games.

And no, I've relatively no interest in backwards compatibility.

So you're saying your slim PS3 can play PS2 game discs, besides the HD re-releases? Every other slim on the planet is only BC with PS1 discs.

Just get a new one. Latest version is probably the best. It looses backwards compatibility, but is supposed to be more energy efficient and not get as hot (so THEORETICALLY, it should last longer) Best bet might to see if there's a deal on one of the latest bundles I think Sonystyle (sony's direct website), had the Infamous 2 bundle for $269.99, no idea if that's still an active deal or not. Uncharted 3 bundle is going to be $299.99, that might be something to look at if you planned on getting Uncharted 3 on day one, but it is $299 vs the standalone's $249. But there might also be an eventual discount on that one... An even better bet might be to look into a potential holiday bundle around November, those usually would be the standard $249.99 msrp AND include some random freebies (like a game or two, sometimes a blu-ray movie thrown in as well)

2 Choices:

1)

bundle

AND

2)New PS3 Hardware Bundle for Black Friday 2011 *LEAKED*

New PS3 Hardware Bundle (Model #CECH-3001A) featuring
- 160gbPS3 Slim System
- Rachet & Clank : All 4 One Game software
- LittleBigPlanet 2 : Special Edition Game software (includes $35 value of bonus content)
- 30-days Playstation PLUS trial membership

EDIT : MSRP is likely to be $249.99 because it says "$165 in Savings". Currently, 160gb PS3 Slim standalone is $249.99. Retailers might add extra incentives or savings during Black Friday to garner your patronage, though.

As I've already stated, I'm not getting a new one unless I come into more disposable income or one happens to fall in my lap.

If nobody can recommend one of the older models, I think I might leave it.

See my above posts. Not buying new, no interest in BC.

Unless I can get a used slim cheap enough, I've no interest.

I gave you options that are well below 200 Quid. Uncharted 3 bundle $300 and you could sell Uncharted 3 for $45, free PS+ for a month you could use or sell. Black Friday bundle for $250 and you could sell those 2 games and PS+ bringing that total under $200.

FWIW My launch day, Phat (60gb) PS3 is still going strong and has only had one problem. A few months after I first got it I was having a final fantasy XII marathon and it overheated. It was my fault though because I had it laying flat on a shelf below the tv, with hardly any breathing room. After that I stood my PS3 tall on a stand with open air around it and never had a problem since. The newer model slims should be even more reliable, as they use much less power to run. So if BC is not something you care about, then I'd recommend finding a used slim model. The links below give pretty good comparisons. http://www.tomsguide.com/us/PS3-Slim-Slower-Faster-phat,news-4539.html http://www.tomsguide.com/us/ps3-slim-power-efficient-advertised,news-4544.html

So if you don't care about Backwards Compatibities for Playstation 2games, Best YLOD resistant model for PS3 phats is The GunMetal Grey PS3 40GB or first edition black PS3 40GB models. But it is best to get a slimline so Get a 320GB PS3 infamous 2 bundle or you can get the PS3 slim 320Giger in the Sport Champions Move bundle.

I forgot prices are probably higher where you are, but ya I think you could probably/possibly get it around 200 Quid and a better chance if you sell the games. If you do end up buying used go with a slim first or if you want phat the newest phat PS3's (40 gb, 80gb no BC, 160 gb) because they have the 65 nm chips and lower watt power supplies. Wikipedia has the specs under configurations heading. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_hardware#Configurations
